Calipari watches multiple targets in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. – Saturday was a long day for Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, who followed up his team’s double-overtime victory at Texas A&M with a night of recruiting evaluation at McCracken County’s Mustang Madness.

Calipari and assistant coach Kenny Payne arrived at McCracken County High School about 6:30 p.m. EST, and the head coach visited with UK signee Skal Labissiere, who’d just completed a game with Reach Your Dream Prep of Memphis.

Labisssiere had 25 points and 17 rebounds in the loss.

After that, Calipari watched two five-star targets go back and forth in a classic with Malik Newman posting 35 points and 14 rebounds to lead Callaway High of Mississippi past Huntington (W.Va.) Prep and Thomas Bryant (33 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks). Callaway went 2-0 during its weekend in Paducah. Huntington Prep suffered its first two losses of the season.

North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried and assistant Orlando Early attended as well, to watch Newman.

Calipari and Payne then watched two 2016 top-five prospects as Thon Maker posted 17 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks to lead Orangeville Prep of Canada past Josh Jackson and Prolific Prep of California 63-55. Jackson had 16 points.

A Michigan State assistant watched the Callaway-Huntington Prep game, presumably for top 2016 target Miles Bridges, and the Orangeville-Prolific game, presumably for Jackson. Both Bridges and Jackson are from Michigan.

Calipari and Payne then stuck around for most of the first half of the nightcap – Our Savior New American of New York versus Prime Prep of Dallas. UK target Cheick Diallo had 21 points and 14 for Our Savior in a 74-72, last-second overtime loss that extended past midnight Central time, or 1 a.m. Lexington time.

Prime Prep five-star junior Terrance Ferguson sat out the second half after taking a hard shot to the face. Ferguson has UK interest but no offer. He’s a top target of Louisville.
