Source: James Southerland is working out for 76ers in Philadelphia

James Southerland played for both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors during the NBA's summer league sessions.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- With hopes of receiving an invitation to the team's training camp and perhaps a contract for the upcoming season, James Southerland is in Philadelphia where he's working out with the 76ers at the team's training facility.

A source close to Southerland said the former Syracuse University player received an invitation from the team to come work out in Philadelphia. He began working out in Philadelphia on Monday and should continue to train there for the next month and a half.

Southerland, a 6-foot-8 forward, was not selected in the NBA's draft back in June, but he played in both of the NBA's summer leagues -- with the 76ers in Orlando and with the Golden State Warriors in Las Vegas.

The invitation to work out in Philadelphia offers no guarantee of a contract. Southerland remains a free agent. He and his agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, are still exploring all of his options with other NBA teams as well as pro teams overseas.

However, as Southerland works out in Philadelphia, the team's player personnel staff can watch him, and Southerland benefits from getting good instruction during his workouts.
