WYOMING – Last season as a freshman, Lamar Norman turned in a memorable debut for the Godwin Heights basketball team.

This season, the 6-foot-3 sophomore guard is taking his game to another level, as he continues to draw even more interest from college recruiters.

Norman was one of the premier freshmen in the area last season, as he helped Godwin Heights capture its first state title in school history. Norman was at his best on the big stage, especially in the Class B state title game, when he came off the bench to score 17 points against Detroit Henry Ford.

As a sophomore starter for the Wolverines this season, Norman is pouring in 21 points per game and has helped to lead Godwin Heights to the No. 1 ranking in the state in Class B.

“Lamar had a sensational game in the state finals last year,” Godwin coach Tyler Whittemore said. “This year as a sophomore, he is having another explosive year and is getting a lot of attention from a lot of college coaches.”

Norman’s explosiveness is evident on the offensive end of the floor, where he can be unstoppable at times.

“Lamar is very explosive as a scorer,” Whittemore said. “He can be very aggressive getting to the basket and gets a lot of quick buckets in transition. In the half-court, he is very good at drawing the defender and getting easy shots for his teammates, and he can also knock down shots from the outside.”

After a productive offseason of working out and playing elite travel ball, Norman has stepped his game up on the defensive end of the floor this season.

“Lamar has really improved his game and taken a step forward by improving immensely on the defensive end,” Whittemore said. “Rebounding is another area that he has been working on each game and is getting better at. Against a big Saginaw team, he had seven rebounds, and that was big in that win.”

Norman also put in plenty of work to improve his quickness and defensive fundamentals.

“His lateral movement has increased a lot,” Whittemore said. “He has also worked with our coaches to stay in the right stance on defense, and that has improved as well. He is also good at contesting shots on the back side.”

In his second season on the varsity, Norman is evolving into a team leader.

“Lamar is developing into a leader, on and off the court,” Whittemore said. “He is always working and wanting to improve his game to be better for his teammates. He is also working hard in the classroom, getting all A’s and B’s. I’m really excited to see how he continues to take his game to another level.”
