Freddie Banks, Canyon Springs (North Las Vegas)
Banks, who starred on UNLV’s 1987 Final Four team and was grieving the death of his former coach, Jerry Tarkanian, guided Canyon Springs to a 19-11 record, its third consecutive Sunrise Region title and the Division I state semifinals. The Pioneers rallied to defeat top-seeded Las Vegas in the regional semis a week after losing to the Wildcats by 23 points, then upended Valley for the regional title after going 0-4 against those teams in the regular season. Canyon Springs also shocked nationally ranked Findlay Prep 60-59 on Feb. 2.
