Newman scores 44 in Callaway win JPS tourney

Boys

Callaway 83, Wingfield 62: At Jackson, Malik Newman scored 44 points, leading the Chargers to victory at the JPS tournament. Dimencio Vaughn added 18 for Callaway. The Falcons had four players in double figures, led by Marcus Roberts with 14.

Lanier 66, Germantown 41: Lanier broke the game open by outscoring Germantown 30-9 in the third quarter at the JPS tournament. Denzel McDuffy led the Bulldogs with 23 points and Tonzell Handy added 16. Jonathan Thompson had 11 for Germantown.

Holmes Co. Central 63, Murrah 54: Demarkis Weatherall scored 19 points and Herman Jones 14 for Holmes at the JPS tournament. For Murrah, Jonas James had 17 points and Eric Thornton 13.

Velma Jackson 66, Laurel 41: Quinndary Weatherspoon led four Falcons in double figures at the Gulfport tournament with 18 points. Moses Greenwood and Kendarius Smith each had 15. Omar Bayless scored 17 points for Laurel.

Greenville-Weston 74, Petal 26: Greenville opened up a 22-6 lead after one quarter and breezed to victory at the Hattiesburg tournament. Deshaven Flowers led the Hornets with 23 points.

Newton Co. Acad. 52, Amite School 37: Newton outscored Amite 13-3 in the fourth quarter at the Columbia Academy tournament. Chance Collins led four Newton players in double figures with 19 points.

West Jones 74, South Jones 46: At Laurel, Neal McLaurin led four players in double figures for West Jones at a tournament hosted by the Mustangs.

Gulfport 59, Madison Central 58: At Gulfport, the host team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit, led by Darius Pittman with 14 points. Leroy Buchanan scored 31 for Madison Central.

Girls

Provine 54, Callaway 39: At Jackson, Provine used a big second quarter, outscoring Callaway 20-7, to advance to the semifinals of the JPS tournament. The Lady Rams were led by Elixis Peyton with 15 points and Jakia Harper with 13. Twila Hill was high scorer for Callaway with 10 points.

Holmes Co. Central 41, Lanier 39: Kannaya Jackson scored 13 points and Monica Smith 10 as Holmes edged Lanier at the JPS tournament. Brittany Rose had 12 points and Kristy Armwood 11 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Murrah 54, Jim Hill 47: Lauren Brooks scored 21 points and Emery Wilson 18 for Murrah in the JPS tournament. Ieisha Lacey and Anissa May had 14 each for Jim Hill.

Shannon 63, Columbus 52: Shannon won at the West Point tournament with 30 points by Tatyana Brownlee and 14 by Asia Anderson. Zaria Jenkins had 22 for Columbus.

Leake Academy 47, East Rankin 44: At Mendenhall, Victoria Sprayberry and Anna Evans each scored 13 points for Leake at the Simpson Academy tournament. Hannah Caldwell had 18 points for East Rankin.

Hillcrest 42, Northwest Rankin 36: Hillcrest held the Northwest Rankin tournament host to five points in the fourth quarter. Scottlyn Lloyd scored 12 for Hillcrest while Ariel Johnson and Kristin Rice each had 12 for the Lady Cougars.

Terry 51,Florence 48: Nyah Tate led Terry with 19 points at the Northwest Rankin tournament. Chelsea Causey scored 18 for Florence.
