Kansas' Thomas Robinson cited for battery after incident outside nightclub

Kansas forward Thomas Robinson, who announced several weeks ago that he will return to the Jayhawks for his junior season, was cited for misdemeanor battery after police responded to a fight at a night club in Lawrence, Kan.

From the Kansas City Star:

A statement by the Lawrence Police Department said that officers were called to The Cave around 2:05 a.m. on the morning in question because of a fight. Officers arrived to find a large group of people outside the night club yelling and walking around the area. One victim, a 25-year-old male who resides in Lawrence, alleged that Robinson had struck him and then spit on him.

A witness reported that a large fight had broken out inside the bar as it was closing. Bar staff moved the conflict outside, where the witness observed the alleged battery. The witness also observed an unidentified second suspect, said to be around 6 feet, 7 inches tall, hit another victim, a 23-year-old Lawrence resident.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Matt Sarna said Tuesday that Robinson is the only person who has been cited for the incident but that he was never booked in Douglas County Jail. Sarna said the case is still under investigation and that more citations could be coming.

According to the report, Kansas coach Bill Self said Robinson notified him of the incident immediately after being interviewed by police.

"Thomas is fully cooperating and we will not have any further comment about this situation as the investigation plays out," Self said.

The police report indicated that Robinson, 20, was not under the influence of alcohol but that The Cave, the nightclub where the incident occurred, is a 21-and-over establishment.
