Alonzo Mourning III earning his own basketball reputation at just the right time

It can't be easy for Alonzo Mourning III, playing high school basketball in the same city his Hall of Fame father won his only NBA title, but the Miami (Fla.) Ransom Everglades High senior forward they call Trey is finally earning his due after years of competing as an unranked three-star recruit.

On Monday, the 6-foot-10 standout narrowed his college list down to Duke, Florida and — of course — his father's alma mater, Georgetown. A day later, the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches named him a Class 4A First Team All-State selection. The announcements came on the heels of Mourning III averaging 29 points and 10 rebounds as a prep senior, leading Ransom to the regional semifinals.

"There's always going to be that pressure, but it's not pressure anymore," he told CBS Miami of following the footsteps of his father, who helped lead the Heat to the 2006 NBA championship after his inspiring return from a kidney transplant. "It's just life, to me. You can either look at it as a blessing or a curse."

Trey Mourning first emerged on the national scene as a high school sophomore, when he amassed an impressive triple-double of 20 points, 15 blocks and 12 rebounds in a 2012 win over Miami rival La Salle. But it's been a long recruiting road, especially for a 6-foot-10 kid with a legacy.

Highlights of Mourning III reflect a skinnier frame and less developed game than his dad did upon winning Gatorade National Player of the Year honors as a Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River High senior in 1988. But the son does have that baby hook in the lane that his father so often preaches to prep players.

If Trey ends up being half the player his father was, whichever school he chooses will have gotten a steal. And, hey, if he should pick the Hoyas, he's already proven he can emerge from his father's shadow.
