2009 AAUs Day 4

This was an interesting day
of AAU action as many of the top teams with NBA prospects were eliminated
on the first day of tournament play after "pool play" rounded out
the seedings. Tony Wroten, Isaiah Austin, Perry Jones, and Anthony
Bennett are all done, as their teams lost. Here are a few other
players who we scouted here in Vegas.

New England Playaz vs. Baltimore
Assault

We had to get out to see Josh
Selby, the 6’3" combo guard out of Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore.
He was a nice player, who can handle the ball, pass, and score.
His shooting touch was solid, but he’s got great body control and
hang time in the air. When finishing at the hoop, he does a good
job squaring his shoulder and getting a good shot up. He uses
hop-steps well and understands angles for getting by his defender.
He can also dig in on defense himself, although he does gamble a fair
amount. His game management wasn’t the best, and he didn’t
play the point guard for this team, which shows that he’s not the
lead guard. His skills seem a little bit more geared towards playing
off-guard, although he does seem to have the ball handling and speed
to play the point. He’ll definitely need to improve his overall
game in order to be a first round pick because he’s quite undersized
for a shooting guard.

Selby’s teammate 6’7"
senior Roscoe Smith was also impressive in this game, as he showed
nice leaping ability and size for the SF/PF position. Coach K
was in attendance observing Rosco during this game. He has nice
moves in the open floor, and had a couple rim shaking dunks, and while
he’s not that skilled, he does have elite level athleticism.
The question is whether he can improve upon the tools he’s got.
He uses his athleticism to score right now, but that won’t make him
effective forever. He’ll eventually need to tune-up his game.

Southern California All Stars
Red vs. Memphis Magic Elite

The Magic were stacked with
several players who have NBA potential in including Joe Jackson, who
played another solid game, but didn’t show an ability to take over
for long stretches. He displayed his athleticism in the open floor
and despite his size, he remains a complete player and potential NBA
prospect.


Adonis Thomas, a rising junior,
looked like the best prospect of the day. He can jump out of the
gym and is a natural athlete who moves fluidly and gracefully.
He moves a little bit like a power forward but can get up and down the
floor in a hurry if he needs to. His perimeter skills are lacking,
especially his jump shot, which isn’t attempted with much balance.
He expressed that this was the part of his game he needed to improve
on in order to play SG or SF in college. However, Adonis is very effective
around the basket. His NBA position is at SF due to his skill-set
but he must greatly improve his handle on the ball and overall perimeter
play in order to man the three. He’s a little bit small for
that right now, so hopefully he continues to grow another inch or two,
yet he does have the potential to guard small forwards due to his strong
body and great athleticism.

The Magic’s Tarik Black showed
length and nice leaping ability. He’s a senior out of Ridgeway
high school, and was a legit 6’9". He didn’t have much of
an offensive repertoire, however, unless it was based of pure athleticism.

Jalen Kendrick, who is listed
at 6’8" but looks more like 6’6" is a solid athlete, but closer to a top 25-30 talent than where some have rated him. He is another example
of how weak the senior class is, as it’s unlikely he would be considered a McDonald’s All American in a normal year. He is a bit selfish with the
ball, and in one play during this game, he got hit in the groin after
looking off his point guard who was ahead of the ball on a two on one
fast break. He wanted to take the ball to the basket against the defender
by himself, and he ended up drawing contact, getting hit in the groin,
and missing the shot completely. Karma is not on his side.

    Kendrick is a beast. Seriously top 25-30 talent? Guys top 10 player and hopefully you’re not basing this off this ONE TOURNAMENT. Do agree this is a weak class though.

    • Devon has a pretty good
      Devon has a pretty good handle on it. And aggressive going to the hoop. But his a pg. and a pg. has to shoot the rock too. And be effective at it. With a consistent jump shot you can’t look him over.

  3. B-More Hoops
    While most thought Selby would be at the Super Showcase with Baltimore Elite. Teaming wit Scoe wasn’t a bad look. Roscoe does have all the tools but I agree he has to work on something’s. It’s coming though. Going to Oak Hill might be what the doctor order. Unlike Melo he won’t have the pass first’s pg’s when he gets there so I question just how much work you’ll see.
