NBA Comparison: Clarence Witherspoon

Strengths: Strong player with a very solid frame … Very long arms to go along with high level vertical … Wide shoulders, good at using his body to create space close to the basket … Has tools and ability to develop into a good defender on the wing … Decent shooter from the midrange when his feet are set … Had a 1.2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, highlighting good decision making and passing for a player who got time at both forward spots … Very low foul rate, managed to generally stay out of foul trouble … Overcame injury issues during his freshman year, showed solid durability in playing in all of Memphis’ 36 games this past season … Can use leaping ability to alter and block shots … Showed improvement as an offensive rebounder … Plays with solid energy and is not one too shy away from contact … Strength to finish through contact … Has ability to put the ball on the floor a bit, very good at looking up the court for the outlet pass … Surprising body control for a player of his size to finish with hooks and floaters in the paint

Weaknesses: Will be much more difficult to use his strength at the NBA level, skillset will need a great deal of refinement to play on the wing … Below average lateral quickness, can be beat off the dribble … Has a very difficult time creating much separation off of the dribble, limited ball handling ability in the half court … Focus and effort on defense can be shaky at times … Gained a great deal of weight in college and though he appeared to be in good shape at the NBA Combine, conditioning could be a concern down the line … Managed to shoot only 40.5% FG and 29.2% 3PT in his sophomore season, pointing to definite work needed on his shot selection and worries surrounding his long range capability … Averaged surprisingly few rebounds for a player with his athletic and physical tools … Low rate of getting to the foul line … Measured with a surprisingly short standing reach, closer to shooting guard range as opposed to small forward … Inconsistent shooting mechanics, not much ability to stretch the floor … Was unable to live up to  high expectations …

Notes: Member of the 2010 U17 USA squad that won Gold at the U17 World Championships in Germany … Was a RCSI Top 10 player in the high school class of 2011 … Did not really live up to those high standards while at the NCAA level, though was a two year contributor … Athleticism and length make him an intriguing SF prospect, though his lack of production and raw skill package make him a probable late 2nd round pick … Played at Memphis under a young, inexperienced coaching staff that has underachieved thus far in developing NBA talent. Figuring out how much his lack of development is due to coaching is a key piece in figuring out the enigma of Adonis Thomas’s potential …

Michael Visenberg 5/31/13

Strengths: A tough and athletic 6’5” forward with a 7ft wingspan and a nose for the ball. His wingspan is incredible for a player his height. He can jump out of the gym and is a natural athlete who moves fluidly and gracefully. He moves a little bit like a power forward but can get up and down the floor in a hurry if he needs to. His perimeter skills are lacking, especially his jump shot, which isn’t attempted with much balance. He expressed that this was the part of his game he needed to improve on in order to play SG or SF in college. However, Adonis is very effective around the basket. Uses his athletic advantage over others to cover a lot of ground chasing down rebounds. Thomas has a good motor and is a guy you want on your team down the stretch because of his toughness.

Weaknesses: His NBA position is at SF due to his skill-set but he must greatly improve his handle on the ball and overall perimeter play in order to man the three. He’s a little bit small for that right now, so hopefully he continues to grow another inch or two, yet he does have the potential to guard small forwards due to his strong body and great athleticism. He has a tendency to feed off of his teammates, and when they aren’t getting him the ball in situations where he can succeed, he struggles to do much offensively.

Notes: Measured 6’6 (in shoes) 240 lbs, with a 7’0 wingspan at the 2012 Kevin Durant Skills Academy
