Top Prospects from the Nike
All Canada Prospect Camp

The two day event showcased
some very talented players competing at a high level. Looking
at the amount of time and quality of work that are being put into the
development of these kids, it is easy to see why Canada has become such
a hot bed for young basketball talent.

Of the 85 or so players that
were selected to participate, many showed great potential and the necessary
skill-sets to be able to compete at a collegiate level. From those,
there were three that stood out from the rest of the group, and are
definitely names to keep an eye on in the next few years. All
three guys played on the Canadian Cadet National Team that finished
3rd in Argentina and qualified for the World Championships next summer.

Negus Webster-Chan PG/SG 6’5 2011

A lanky and wiry combo guard
who shows the court vision and passing skills necessary to play full
time as a 1. With his size he has the ability to see overtop of
defenses, combining that with good instincts to read plays, he is able
to deliver well timed passes. He has long strides and decent quickness
which allow him to get into the lane where he can finish with his length
and athleticism or dish to the open man. His stroke is very smooth
and he is comfortable shooting from long range. Defensively is
where Negus does a lot of damage because of his wingspan, good lateral
foot-speed and willingness to put in the work to contain his man.
At this point he is a bit too light which gives him trouble playing
against contact, and his ability to break defenders down of the dribble
needs some work, but for a young player he shows some real upside.

Duane Notice PG/SG 6’2 2012

An extremely strong and explosive
guard, who plays at a high pace looking to attack at all times.
He is very good at getting by defenders thanks to his quickness and
nice variety of moves off the dribble. He can turn the corner
and explode to the hoop, where his strength and body-control allow him
to make plays against bigger defenders. His jumper looks good
and he can get hot from the outside, but at this point he is a bit inconsistent.
Defensively, thanks to his quickness and low center of gravity he can
stay infront of ball handlers, and he’s able to keep his ground when
bodying up to his man. He can get into trouble by trying to do
too much and at this point his playmaking skills need work, but for
a kid who is only 14, he has more than enough time to hone his game.

Nikolas Stauskas SG 6’4 2012

A crafty player who is able
to score effectively in a number of different ways. He is very
dangerous as an outside shooter because his smooth release and great
balance allow him to shoot spotting up and off the dribble. Because
defenders have to play up on him he is able to utilize shotfakes and
jabs to create space so he can set up his dribble drives. Handling
the ball he is very comfortable using either hand, and he has a nice
mix of crossover and hesitation moves to keep the opposition guessing.
He is good at playing angles and he has solid leaping ability allowing
him to finish over top and around the help side defense. At 6’4
he is slightly undersized for the 2, and he lacks the great explosiveness
to compensate, but at his age, he still has time to grow and to work
on his physicality.
