NCAA Power 16: November 16th

Welcome to our first Power 16 of the 2009-10 season. We’ll be back every Monday with updated rankings and our weekly Games to Watch. Our Power 16 worked in a few glorified exhibitions last week, but the competition heats up this week with several early season tournaments.

Power 16

Comment
1. Kansas
1-0
America meet Xavier Henry. The freshman stole the show with 27 pts in the Jayhawks’ debut.
2. Kentucky
1-0
Eric Bledsoe showed well in his debut with 24 pts and 7 rebs. Can John Wall top him Monday?
3. Michigan St.
1-0
This year’s version of Sparty may have more depth than last year. Draymond Green could be a double-double machine this year.
4. Texas
1-0
Texas is big, talented and has tremendous depth. Pittman trimmed down and is making more plays.
5. North Carolina
3-0
The Heels were a little sloppy against Valpo, perhaps looking ahead to NYC. Can the Heels height overwhelm its opponents and lead them to the 2K title?
6. West Virginia
1-0
Devin Ebanks did not suit up for the first game for undisclosed reasons…this may be a concern.
7. Villanova
1-0
Big 5 play starts this week. Penn should not pose any problems for Nova though.
8. Purdue
1-0
Robbie Hummel looked healthy against the Matadors scoring 17 points in 22 minutes.
9. Ohio St.
2-0
Evan Turner gets our nod for Player of the Week averaging 19, 17 and 7. Big match up against the Tar Heels in MSG Thursday.
10. Tennessee
1-0
Bruce Pearl’s team is off and running forcing 19 turnovers in their opener.
11. California
2-0
The Golden Bears struggled to win a close one vs Murray St, but we’ll know more about this team after its trip to NYC this week.
12. Butler
1-0
The Bulldogs had trouble with Davidson in the opener, but this is a talented bunch.
13. Michigan
1-0
This team should be 7-0 when they visit Kansas on 12/19.
14. Duke
1-0
Duke beat the defending national champs last week by 36. Too bad it was Division II Findlay.
15. Oklahoma
1-0
Hope the Sooners are ready to play Saturday night when they visit VCU. This will be a tough test on the road at a Mid-Major.
16. Washington
1-0
FR Abdul Gaddy is off to a slow start but SO Isiah Thomas is picking up the slack.

I’m looking forward to the Dayton vs. Georgia Tech game.  I’ve been skeptical about GT going into this season.  I think they are overrated. I could be wrong though.  I think Dayton will beat them.  Should be an interesting game for sure.  We will finally see Derrick Favors in action.
