The Spurs badly need a big man who can shoot. Kai Jones seems obvious, and big men from UT have a pretty good track record lately (Thompson, Turner, Allen, Hayes).

Still it’s tough to take this guy with modest stats for a disappointing team over guys like Mitchell and Kispert who seem certain to become at least solid productive NBA players, or an elite athlete like Keon Johnson. If they take Mitchell I worry about the message it sends to DeJounte Murray, who worked really hard to improve as a shooter and playmaker.

Ideally the Spurs would trade this pick and get their stretchb big man. But if they still have the pick on draft night …

    Kispert.

Jones makes the most sense from a fit perspective but I feel like Mitchell could be the pick here. And I feel like he could be a steal at this position.

Tempted to say Franz Wagner as well, but I think Usman Garuba would be amazing in San Antonio. That would make for one insane defensive team.

Spurs seem to have a reputation for drafting NBA ready guys but if we look back on the Spurs draft history and player development they seem to always pick the player with the highest upside and don’t really expect their rookies to be important peices immediately so thats why I picked Keon. I think best player available is Cam Thomas and with Derozan leaving I think it would be a perfect fit but they already have Lonnie Walker who is obviously much farther ahead in the Popovich development program. Keon has the most upside that 48 inch vert is ridiculous and he uses it on his jumpshots. Aside from that between Kai Jones and Usman Garuba I think they would pick Jones because he seems to have more ideal upside. As others said can’t rule out Franz Wagner either.

Yes but their first or last name has to start with a B ( Brent Barry, Beno, Bonner, Belli, Bertans).

I would really hate to see the Spurs draft Wagner in this situation …. to me that’s taking a poor man’s Davis Bertans when you could take one of two guys who are almost a lock to be pretty good (Mitchell and Kispert), the best athlete in the draft (Keon Johnson) or the best fit as far as teem needs (Kai Jones).

Don’t know much about Garuba but he doesn’t appear to be a shooter, which means he can’t play with Poeltl, probably ever. I wouldn’t want to draft a guy with the 12th pick who’s only ever going to be a backup C, plus I really like Eubanks.
