For_Never_EverParticipantWhere would Gary Payton rate with the PG that are playing now ?

Charlie SheenParticipantIn his prime he’d be the best I mean athletically he isnt superb but lets be honest the Glove will shut anybody down and run the hell out of an offense basically a bigger Rondo, who can score and defend both guard spots

omphalosParticipantI think a healthy Chris Paul still gives Payton a run for his money. People underestimate how good a defender Paul is, I remember seeing him up against John Wall and he was given him fits with his quick hands and good positioning.
Payton would still be first, but to give Paul his credit, it would be closer to 1A and 1B than a legitimate separation between first and second in my opinion.

For_Never_EverParticipantI think Paul and Nash would be the two that could maybe school Gary Payton. Since both are complete PG that can assist 15 A game and get 30 points A game. Nash two or 3 years ago.

BwereadyParticipantThe PGs of today have a lot more skill set offensively so yes GP was a lOck down defender in his era but the PGs he went against wasnt D.rose cp3 J.wall even a Billiups. GP can’t keep up wit there speeds and handles as seen when J will was crossing ova JP in 2000 showed Jp couldn’t keep up with the ball handles n crossovers In today’s game. GP best move on offense was backing guards down lol he would not be able to back down the top guards like that. Best GP could be is a poor mans Rondo

joecheck88ParticipantI don’t know if he is the best but he definately isn’t a poor mans rondo. Rondo may be a poor mans payton. Gary payton has always been underrated to me. The dude could play and no doubt in my mind he would still be able to guard todays athletes just maybe not quite as effectively.

BwereadyParticipantI’ dont want you to think I’m dissing GP but I give you a great example of why GP wouldn’t able to guard today’s PGs.
when GP went to the lakers and heat he was being killed by the newer guards that was coming in. Did we forget how Tony paker was shitting on GP. Most of the new guards now a days have tOny paker type speed. And if you take away Gp D what can he do for you he can’t control the game like Rondo do.
I don’t think GP sucks but in this new era I don’t think GP game wouldnt translate in today’s game . Think GP from the era of hand checking so that fit GP style of playing D.0-

For_Never_EverParticipantThere no one like Rose, Westbrook, and No one as good as Paul and Nash with assist and offence during his time.

Samuelindo1ParticipantAnyone who is given the responsibility to slow down Jordan in the NBA Finals and does a good job at it will be okay defensively in todays NBA. Jordan went 6/19 in game 4 and 5/19 in game 6, and payton was the main reason for that. Plus he was a good playmaker and scorer. I think he would be a top 3 pg if he were in the league today.

Samuelindo1ParticipantPayton was 35 when he played for the lakers and two years older when he played for the heat.

BwereadyParticipantWas still consider a Elite PG at that time and was still known for his D y you think the lakers and heat signed him. And I guess slowing down Mike Is only giving up 23 and then 22 n 8 lol when in that series Mike was not needed to win. Just F’ing with you GP is a great Denfender but I don’t think his game would put him in top 5 guards in today’s game

apb540ParticipantI can’t believe everyone is cool with people calling Payton a "poor man’s Rondo." I don’t believe that you should be allowed to be a member of this site if you really believe that. We are talking about The Glove in his prime right??

FastAndFuriousParticipantHand Checking is not allowed in todays game, GP was a great defensive player in his day, but I dont think he could check Westbrook or Rose, they are quicker faster and stronger than him.

BwereadyParticipantIf you can answer this question ABP540 are the guards today more athletic better handles etc then they was in Gps prime? Bcuz yes in his era the glove is top 5 but we talking bout him in today’s game at his prime. GP move on offensive was backing guards down or he would take smaller guards in the post what elite guard can he back down? Or who can he lockdown in today’s game when handchecking is not allowed?

BwereadyParticipantWhat I mean buy a poor mans Rondo is GP is not a shooter or scorer neither is Rondo so teams now a days would play D like they do vs Rondo now but what makes Rondo in today’s game is he is just as fast as Drose and other top guards Rondo has freak of nature hands and arms for his size which allows for him to have better handles then GP get more steals. Rondo is among the very few guards who can control a game with out scoring but look at box score n he has 18ast 10boards 5 steals
Don’t want you to think I’m dissing GP bcuz he is a great in his era

BELLY333333ParticipantVery few teams simply have their own first and second-round picks. The Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs represent 10 percent of the league. The other 90 percent has something coming in or going out (based on protections).

BringWinBingoParticipant“There are going to be nights when one guy is more important than the other,” Casey said. “One night we might need a little more speed running the floor, the other night we may need shooting. Like I said, there is not a lot difference between eight, nine and ten. It is pretty even, so there is going to be competition between those two young men on a given night. I don’t think we would be wrong by playing either one as they are equal.

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipantIf anyone would know about how being an a$$hole on the court can benefit your game, it’s Kobe Bryant. Kobe has the reputation of being one of the most competitive, driven and cold-blooded players in the league. That type of attitude has helped Kobe become of the best to ever play the game.
Dwight Howard seems to be soaking up all the game Kobe is dishing. If he can apply them to his game and not take offense to the criticism, the Lakers will be in good shape for years to come.
Boston Celtics guard Courtney Lee had a nice rebound game this past Sunday against Armani Milano, scoring 11 points. He played much better than his first game in Turkey and it was nice to see him feel more comfortable with his teammates. Lee struggled in the team’s exhibition opener, often looking uncomfortable on the perimeter.

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipantJason Terry is much more comfortable in the sixth man role, so there is no need to mess with that. Besides him, there are really no other pure guards that you can count on as Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith are far too unproven to warrant meaningful minutes at this juncture.
I always felt Lee would be the type of player that would fit in seamlessly with a new team, especially a team with championship aspirations. He doesn’t always need the ball in his hands and has always been a willing defender, dating back to his days at Western Kentucky.
It was nice to see Lee have a solid bounce back game as he will need to provide a calming presence in the starting lineup to start the year.hfdgt34

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipantMaybe two years, maybe three, maybe five years from now. Or maybe even at the end of this season if the Lakers win their coveted 17th franchise world championship—though it’s unlikely Bryant would miss out on a chance to break the Boston Celtics’ NBA record for most titles.
However, you can calm down Lakers fans. It’s very possibly the last thing on Kobe’s mind right now as he gets prepared for a crack at his sixth championship.
“I don’t know why (the media) is paying any more attention to it now as opposed to two years ago when I said it,” Bryant said quizzically. “It’s the same old, same old. I don’t know what caused it to get their attention right now.345r3

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipant“What I commented on is really no revelation.” Kobe said about an internet interview he did last week. “It’s my 17th season coming up and I’ve been fortunate to play that long. We’ll see where it goes. (There’s) a lot of basketball to be played.”
And Bryant is very happy that the majority of that playing time will be alongside Nash.
The two-time NBA MVP has adjusted to his new Lakers teammates as if he has been playing with them for years. Which, in essence, he has, according to Kobe.5t3443

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipant“He makes (my game) a lot easier. I can move without the ball and just trust that he’ll make the right decision. It’s as simple as that. I really don’t have to work (as) hard to get opportunities. I find openings within the defense, and he makes the defense pay.”
Center Dwight Howard verifies everything Bryant said.
“(Nash and Bryant) know how to play basketball,” Howard said after practice.”Being the guards, they understand how the offense has to run, and Steve has done an excellent job in finding the open guy. We’re just going to play off that.hsdfg

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipant“In the game the other night, he was throwing the ball between guy’s legs, behind their back and making guys fall. He’s making things very easy.
“He’s Steve Nash.”
Nash said after Sunday’s exhibition game that he feels comfortable with Bryant on his side.vsf

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipantWhen Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant finally emerged from the Los Angeles Lakers’ locker room late in the first quarter, they got a standing ovation just for walking to their seats.
The Lakers’ fans shouldn’t worry. Their big stars expect to be out of street clothes and back in uniform very soon – and for much bigger games than an exhibition in the Inland Empire.
Damian Lillard had 14 points and seven assists in his first NBA action, and the Portland Trail Blazers ran to a 93-75 victory over Los Angeles in a preseason game Wednesday night.
The Lakers visited their avid fans an hour east of Los Angeles with just 60 percent of their projected starting lineup in uniform. Bryant sat out to rest a strained right shoulder, and Howard isn’t playing during his deliberate return from offseason back surgery – although he was healthy enough to join in the ”Kobe! Kobe!” chant that erupted in the first half.

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipant“I thought our guards did a very good job of finding him. I thought it was a good first performance for him.”
Drummond acknowledged he had some nerves before the game.
“My teammates saw that, but they talked to me before the game,” Drummond said. “They said, just play the game, do the things you need to do, help us on the defensive end and things will start coming to you.

ZOOKINGSAWAParticipantThe Philadelphia 76ers changed the makeup of their team this offseason by swapping swingman Andre Iguodala for All-Star center Andrew Bynum and experienced shooting guard Jason Richardson. While Bynum looks to be the team’s leader and go-to guy, Jrue Holiday will be looked to for leadership as well. The fourth-year point guard has been one of the 76ers’ biggest contributors since being selected 17th overall in 2009 and has helped the team make consecutive playoff appearances. In 2010-11 they lost in the first round, in 2011-12 they made it to the second round, and in 2012-13 he sees more progress on the horizon.

I always tell them, ‘Don’t take these days for granted, man. This is the best job in the world to have, right here.’
