I think a healthy Chris Paul still gives Payton a run for his money. People underestimate how good a defender Paul is, I remember seeing him up against John Wall and he was given him fits with his quick hands and good positioning.

Payton would still be first, but to give Paul his credit, it would be closer to 1A and 1B than a legitimate separation between first and second in my opinion.

The PGs of today have a lot more skill set offensively so yes GP was a lOck down defender in his era but the PGs he went against wasnt D.rose cp3 J.wall even a Billiups. GP can’t keep up wit there speeds and handles as seen when J will was crossing ova JP in 2000 showed Jp couldn’t keep up with the ball handles n crossovers In today’s game. GP best move on offense was backing guards down lol he would not be able to back down the top guards like that. Best GP could be is a poor mans Rondo

I don’t know if he is the best but he definately isn’t a poor mans rondo. Rondo may be a poor mans payton. Gary payton has always been underrated to me. The dude could play and no doubt in my mind he would still be able to guard todays athletes just maybe not quite as effectively.

I’ dont want you to think I’m dissing GP but I give you a great example of why GP wouldn’t able to guard today’s PGs.
when GP went to the lakers and heat he was being killed by the newer guards that was coming in. Did we forget how Tony paker was shitting on GP. Most of the new guards now a days have tOny paker type speed. And if you take away Gp D what can he do for you he can’t control the game like Rondo do.
I don’t think GP sucks but in this new era I don’t think GP game wouldnt translate in today’s game . Think GP from the era of hand checking so that fit GP style of playing D.

Anyone who is given the responsibility to slow down Jordan in the NBA Finals and does a good job at it will be okay defensively in todays NBA.  Jordan went 6/19 in game 4 and 5/19 in game 6, and payton was the main reason for that.  Plus he was a good playmaker and scorer.  I think he would be a top 3 pg if he were in the league today.

And I guess slowing down Mike Is only giving up 23 and then 22 n 8 lol when in that series Mike was not needed to win.  Hand Checking is not allowed in todays game, GP was a great defensive player in his day, but I dont think he could check Westbrook or Rose, they are quicker faster and stronger than him.

What I mean buy a poor mans Rondo is GP is not a shooter or scorer neither is Rondo so teams now a days would play D like they do vs Rondo now but what makes Rondo in today’s game is he is just as fast as Drose and other top guards Rondo has freak of nature hands and arms for his size which allows for him to have better handles then GP get more steals. Rondo is among the very few guards who can control a game with out scoring but look at box score n he has 18ast 10boards 5 steals

Boston Celtics guard Courtney Lee had a nice rebound game this past Sunday against Armani Milano, scoring 11 points. He played much better than his first game in Turkey and it was nice to see him feel more comfortable with his teammates. Lee struggled in the team’s exhibition opener, often looking uncomfortable on the perimeter.

Jason Terry is much more comfortable in the sixth man role, so there is no need to mess with that. Besides him, there are really no other pure guards that you can count on as Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith are far too unproven to warrant meaningful minutes at this juncture.

I always felt Lee would be the type of player that would fit in seamlessly with a new team, especially a team with championship aspirations. He doesn’t always need the ball in his hands and has always been a willing defender, dating back to his days at Western Kentucky.

It was nice to see Lee have a solid bounce back game as he will need to provide a calming presence in the starting lineup to start the year.hfdgt34
