THEY’LL NEVER ADMIT IT NOW..BUT THATS TRUE…THEY WANTED SAM BOWIE!!! YES THE SAME SAM BOWIE THAT HAS BECOME A SUBJECT OF MANY JOKES..THE WORST DRAFT PICK EVER THEY SAY!! FOR YEARS THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM WAS THAT U NEEDED A DOMINANT BIG MAN IF U WANTED TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS..DURING THE 1984 DRAFT..THEN CHICAGO G.M. ROD THORN SAID JORDAN WASN’T A FRANCHISE PLAYER AND THAT JORDAN WAS A GOOD OFFENSIVE PLAYER..BUT NOT A OVERPOWERING OFFENSIVE PLAYER..W..T..F..!!!!??? CAN U BELIEVE THAT!!?? THEN COACH KEVIN LOUGHERY SAID THAT 3rd PICK IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A BIG MAN!!! DISAPPOINTED BY NOT GETTING OLAJUWON OR BOWIE..CHICAGO NEWSPAPERS POSTED HEADLINES SAYING THE BULLS WERE STUCK WITH JORDAN!!! BUT THEY DIDN’T NOTICE A FEW YEARS EARLIER SOME GUYS NAME BARRY BIRD & EDWIN JOHNSON..NO LARRY BIRD & EARVIN JOHNSON WERE PERIMETER PLAYERS THAT WERE BATTLING IT OUT AGAINST EACH OTHER YEAR AFTER YEAR FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP…

I’ve always thought it a little harsh to beat up of Bowie, injuries are what killed his career – not lack of skill or effort. If he hadn’t been picked one spot before Jordan he would have been mostly forgotten.

Their coach also said Jordan was a good scorer but not a game changer ahah.

I would have to disagree on this… The Bulls were actually leaning to draft Sam Perkins not Sam Bowie… I read an article about then-GM of the Bulls Rod Thorne (now with NJN)… He was curious about Perkins should Jordan not be available at 3… But as destiny handed it, the Bulls made the right pick in Michael Jordan… They had always analyzed about Sam Bowie who is mostly injury-proned in his college career…

they knew jordan would be good but no one can predict a player getting to that level that jordan reached, its hard to judge if the player you draft third overall could turn into the most clutch player of all time

no one could have predicted jordan to be the GOAT so picking the dream or bowie might have seemed smarter at the time… besides if bowie could have stayed healthy who knows what Portland might have been

Michael Jordan is the best player ever and Kobe Bryant won’t be able to define that otherwise. Jordan played with bums. Kobe has Pau, Odom, Bynum, and Artest.
