UFC 126 this saturday. Here is my breakdown and predictions for the main card tommorow:
main event:
Middleweight Title fight, ANdersen Silva vs Vitor Belfort
Andersen Silva is widely considered the number 1 p4p fighter in the world (#2 in my book). At 12-0 inside the UFC, he has the record for longest winning strek in UFC history. And up until his most recent fight, he hadnt even really been challenged much. Next in line is veteran and fellow brazilian VItor Belfort. Belfort is riding a 5 fight win streak including 4 KO’s. Silva is widely considered the best striker in mma and very few opponents care to spend much time with him standing instead looking to take him down. But for the first time in a long time, SIlva will be fighting a guy more then happy to engage on the feet. VItor is also an aggressive striker with power in hands who wants nothing to do with the ground game. SHould be explosive. One other reason to look forward to this fight is that UFC president Dana White announced that if silva were to win and GSP(my pick for #1 p4p) wins his next fight, the two would square off in what would be MMA’s version pacquiao vs mayweather.
my pick: Andersen Silva
Rich Franklin vs Forrest Griffin (lightheavyweight bout)
Two respected former champions trying to remain in the title picture square off for the first time in their long UFC careers. Both guys are considered some of the best cardio machines as well as game planners in the sport. Both are cerebral strikers who can make adjustments on the fly during a fight. This another fight that will probably not see either guy look to take it to the floor as both fighters prefer to stand and bang. Forrest has some of the best leg kicks in the division while Rich has an excellent jab and an overall unorhtodox southpaw technique.
my pick: rich franklin
Ryan Bader vs Jon Jones (lightheavyweight bout)
This is potentially a title shot on the line matchup as these two young up and coming fighters have yet to taste defeat(jones was DQ’d in a fight he was dominating due to an illeglal strike). Both guys are former college wrestlers who have shown in their mma careers a willingness to stand and trade on the feet. As talented as ryan bader is though, Jon Jones might be the next dominant champion in the sport and is a solid favorite in this fight. He is never one to dissapoint and throws crazy spinning backfists, and flying knees and all kinds of stuff out of videogames. His reach and overall standing advantage will be too much for bader just as it has for everyone else.
my pick: jon jones
Antonio Banuelos vs Miguel Torres (bantamweight bout)
this should be a war. Torres was not long ago considered a top 5 p4p fighter and the king of the bantamweight division with over 30 consecutive victories under his belt. However back to back losses a year ago dropped him down the rankings. He rebounded with a win in his last fight and now looks to climb back into title contention with a win over banuelos. Torres is one of the tallest and longest fighters at 135 and he uses his reach to keep opponents at a distance where he picks them apart with punches in bunches and knees. ANd when it does hit the ground, he is bjj black belt who has no probelm fighting off his back. Banuelos is a long time veteran of the sport who has always teetered on the edge of being a contender but has never put together the type of run to fight for a title. I have had the pleasure of watching him fight in person and there is not too many fighters that are funner to watch in th esport. Antonio who is a chuck liddell protege leaves it all in the cage and is eager to please the fans with his aggressive go for broke style. Winner could be in line for a title fight.
my pick: miguel torres

i just read a long column written by a brazilian with inside info and he was detailing the history between silva nd belfort and how it goes way back to 2000 and silva absolutley hates vitor. Vitor grew up rich and is to this day more popular in brazil and silva grew up poor and had to work for everything and is very jealous of vitor while vitor can really give a shiit about silva.
should be fun

4th dimensionGSP is the worst possible match up for Silva. Its been proven that he has trouble against great wrestler/grappler and GSP is one of, if not THE BEST take down fighter. Im most certainly sure Silva would lose to GSP.

4th dimensionTheres no other fight for Silva in the middleweight. He has two choices, either he fights GSP or he moves up to Light Heavyweight and face Shogun Rua, who is another striker like Belfort (and you saw how that turned out).
