Curry’s shooting 45.5 from three, while Olynyk barely trails him at 44.4%.
Can you imagine having the Stephen Curry of centers on your team? But with elite defense?
That’s what Olynyk is. He’s like #1 in 3pt % since Thanksgiving, and 5th in the league overall. Just ridiculous.
Problem is, Coach Stevens is only playing him like 20 minutes per game, a big reason the Celtics are only tied for 4th in the East, rather than pushing Toronto for that 2nd seed.
Here’s how it started:
Olynyk had an epic 2nd half of last year’s regular season, just off the charts effective. KO was the #1 or #2 reason that the Celtics went on an epic run and made the playoffs as a 7 seed.
Brad Stevens, as a 2nd year coach, froze up in the playoffs against Cleveland last year. Going against everything that got the Celtics in the playoffs in the first place, Stevens stupidly benched Olynyk in the playoffs and got swept in doing so.
Stevens got nervous and choked. He tried to out Cav the Cavs, and that was never going to work. The only chance in hell the Celtics had in winning games in that Cavs series was to stick with what worked in the regular season, SMALL BALL.
So Stevens dragged his grudge against Olynyk into this season. To start the season, KO was only getting like 16 minutes per game, as the 3rd big off the bench. What a f’ng joke.
Stevens started the season completely ignoring what had made the Celtics successful last season, and the Celtics flailed around with a starting lineup of Tyler Zeller and David Lee.
Even now, with KO officially in the top 5 in 3pt %, he’s still the 3rd guy off the bench, and still only gets about 20 minutes per game.
In those 20 minutes, the Celtics play better than the Pistons do with Drummond on the court in his 30+ minutes per game.
KO is making one of the biggest impacts in the league, but doing so with just a fraction of the minutes of other top players.
And while Brad Stevens is supposedly smartening up and trusting KO like he should, there is still a huge risk that come playoff time, Stevens will freeze up again, and bench Olynyk for missing out on a few rebounds.
Brad Stevens is comfortable watching Isaiah Thomas brick 10 straight shots, knowing that it’s just a matter of time before he heats up. Unfortunately, Stevens still doesn’t give Olynyk the same long leash, even though Olynyk is shooting like 10 points better from 3 than Thomas is.
Stephen Curry is changing the game, by forcing coaches to give a much longer leash to their good shooters. It used to be a capital crime to dribble up the court and fire away from beyond the 3 point line. Now Curry does it all the time, and other coaches are taking notice.
Unfortunately, Olynyk still doesn’t get the Steph Curry level long leash from Coach Stevens, but it’s just a matter of time until he does.
You’ll even see Olynyk dribbling the ball up the court and pulling up from 3 on a regular basis.
Steph Curry is changing the game, but the Steph Curry of centers is poised to have perhaps as much impact in changing the game, because at 7 feet he draws centers out to the 3 point line and beyond, while Steph is only drawing opposing guards out there.
This will be an interesting rivalry over the years, Curry vs Olynyk.
Olynyk will never put up the sheer numbers of Curry, but can have the same +/- impact because of his size.
And other centers like Porzingis, Jokic, Towns, and Kaminsky are going to change the game with Olynyk.
In fact, you might even see Ben Simmons become the #3 pick in the draft, after Ingram and Bender.
You see, Ingram and Bender both have center length, guard skills, and most importantly, 3 point range off the catch or off the dribble.

trappedintheclosetAs top five 3 point shooters, both Curry and Olynyk are shoe-ins for the 3 point contest all star weekend.
That will be an important early chapter in the Curry/Olynyk rivalry.
Kind of like the GS/Bos game earlier this year when GS was undefeated, and Olynyk led Boston to overtime, setting up GS for a loss the next night.

Mad MaxParticipantDude you know what? I think you are totally right! Why don’t the Celtics fire the incompitent Brad Stevens and hire you? Clearly with your vision on forsight and Olynyk’s greatest that can on be rivaled by gods and not mortal men the Celtics will not only win a NBA title, you’ll win titles every year, you may never lose a game, ever! It’s so simple.

trappedintheclosetOlynyk’s childhood heroes were Steve Nash and Dirk. With his point guard skills, Olynyk is actually a nice combination of the two, though Olynyk is a better defender than either ever were.
Steph Curry patterned his game on Steve Nash as well, so it’s no wonder that Steph and the Steph Curry of centers have so much in common.

trappedintheclosetIt’s interesting to compare Curry and KO’s 3rd seasons in the league, though Curry played less than 30 games that year.
Check out the per 36 minutes and per 100 possessions

trappedintheclosetWhile Curry’s defense is merely impressively average, Olynyk is an elite defender:
Defensive rating leaders among Centers and PF/C:
1 Tim Duncan
2 B Diaw
3 T Splitter
4 K Olynyk
It’s this elite defense that can help him make an MVP candidate level impact without being the volume scorer that Curry is.

Magic JordanParticipantHis name is only a reflection of his sexual preference. No connection between his sheer amount of annoying and pointless posts that will flood the forum for the next few days before he is banned again.

trappedintheclosetget off my thread if you only have zero substance as usual.
In fact you’re better off, because when you do opine about the future you’re usually way off, and it’s better not to leave evidence.
