Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantYea. I’m not sure what the thinking was here. Seems like haliburton would have been the one guy that they would have made off limits unless they were getting a superstar in return (which sabonis is not). I guess they just wanted sabonis that bad, but it’s hard to see how this really makes them significantly better in the short or long-term. We’ll see what else they do before the deadline, with regards to Barnes and Holmes, before judging too harshly.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantIt is an organization whose plan never seems clear. When rebuilding certainly for as long as the Kings have, a person should, at least, be able to look at a team and how they play and have a sense of what the team wants to look like when they are next good. The idea when they brought in Luke Walton was to play like the Warriors, but without the same caliber of elite shooting, passing, no Draymond, and really no defense. Other than that, they had the guy who filled in and coached the Warriors. It was quite the plan. It is amazing that it failed. In recent drafts, I have liked the individuals the Kings have taken. I like Fox, Mitchell, Haliburton, Hield, and think Davis was a great player to acquire for a 2nd round pick. The reason to take Haliburton in the draft was because he fell, but the problem always was that a guard core with Fox, Haliburton, and Hield was always going to be small and defensively problematic. They are all small. In a league where teams want to be 6’8 to 6’10 across the board, they have been throwing their assets at guys who are 6’5″ and in most cases quite a bit under. Now, Sabonis brings more balance to the roster, but this is another lost season. A lost season where when you look at the top of the draft you see Jabari Smith, Paolo Banchero, and Chet Holmgren. Smith probably figures to be the most natural partner for Sabonis because he has a lot of Myles Turner in him. Holmgren and Banchero don’t seem like great fits if the team ever wants to get stops with Sabonis and one of them. If they either can’t get one of those three or look at the guards, Ivey and Johnny Davis have a ton of promise but are on the smaller size, and neither have the kind of point instincts of Haliburton. It is possible they get Smith and stumble their way into something promising, but it really has been a team that has put so many players in bad spots.

OhCanada-ParticipantI get it. They couldn’t trade Fox because he can’t shoot or run an offense and they needed to dial it back to a three guard system. But they ended up trading the core piece to their rebuild. The guy changing the culture in Sacramento.
Haliburton has done nothing but improved every single game I have seen him play in. I remember the first time I watched him play in Iowa St honestly thinking he was a scrub and I don’t usually think that about athletes, you know… I’m realistic. I understand most division one basketball players are extremely skilled and/or talented players. And eventually he just kept getting better. Wigginton got hurt and Tyrse took off. Gets drafted and comes close to winning rookie of the year. Next year once again improves.
I just think its a terrible idea to trade away a player you believe will be an allstar, is happy with the situation and the core of your rebuild. Sabonis is a good player but how will he like playing in Sacramento? How will he adapt to playing in the West? How much patience will he have for his new teammates and organization? Kings messed up. Haliburton will be a better player than Sabonis for the majority of the next 10 years and Hield imo is an extremely underrated piece. He’s gonna ball out now that he’s escaped Sacramento just watch.

BKGingerSnapParticipantI understand this is a terrible trade in the sense that Haliburton is probably going to be better than Fox and haliburton is likely with the pacers the next 7 years while Sabonis will likely walk in 3 years. But Sabonis is better than Haliburton is right now and this trade makes the the Kings better. Sabonis is 19ppg, 12 boards, and 5 assists a game on 58% shooting. The Kings will be able to run with Sabonis, Fox, Barnes, Mitchell, Holiday. Watching them play Minny tonight, it’s clear that the Fox/Sabonis pick n roll will be effective. Indy won this trade but they are tanking for the rest of the year so it will be awkward when they start sitting Haliburton.

OhCanada-ParticipantI disagree. I think Sabonis is non-existent defensively. He hurts your team on that end. I believe Haliburton will get handed the keys to the Pacers immediately similar to when Brogdon joined Indiana and we will see him flourish as a two way player under Rick Carlisle. I’m assuming they are trying to trade Brogdon as well, but even if that doesn’t happen until the offseason Haliburton’s the guy. I would rather have Haliburton on the court for my team than Sabonis.

OhCanada-ParticipantHolmes/Sabonis is a much bigger problem than Turner/Sabonis. Also much bigger problem than Fox/Haliburton.
