Love the deal sends a message to the rest of the league in case you werent aware Toronto’s not going anywhere all those naysayers out there expecting a rebuild better believe your still gonna lose to Toronto lol. I expect Siakam to get a max extension and Gasol and Ibaka to go through negotiations in Summer. Doubt any of them get traded.

That’s a massive deal for someone who has missed a good chunk of games over the last years even if it’s just a one year deal. Can see why you are excited that your team is trying to keep the group together but not so sure if this is more than an expiring contract as a trade asset down the road to make movesat one point. 

To make it clear I like Lowry and think he has something left in the tank and was a huge part of this team for a while now but not something I get overly excited about as someone who has no business with the Raptors.

That’s a legacy contract to me, the message it sends is more that we look after ours in Toronto. It’s a great message to send by the franchise of if you stick with us, we will stick with you.

 

The hope will be other players around the league look at what Toronto have done & make it a more attractive destination. In saying all this I 100% believe Lowry deserves it.

 Theres really not much available in terms of free agents for 2020. Its basically a bad year to have tons of space. The Raptors had a clean slate of salary for 2019-2020 so they could still resign Van Vleet, Ibaka and Gasol and afford 2 or 3 max contracts which clearly they wont get any max calibur players from because…it’s Toronto and those players just arent available in this years class.

Anthony Davis, Draymond Green, Mike Conley wont be coming here, Hayward would probably opt in, Sabonis and Hield are restricted so who does that leave? 

A Demar Derozan return could be in the works but Im not too sure how he would feel about that. Montrezl Harrell would be my #1 target but he plays the same position as Siakam and prob wouldnt wanna play smallball C or come to Canada. Andre Drummond will probably opt out of his $29 mil contract but I dont think he adds to a winning situation. Otto Porter will probably opt out. Ingram is restricted but it’ll be interesting to see how his situation develops in New Orleans. Danilo Galinari would be a great fit at SF and with the veteran core and Hassan Whiteside could be another guy they target if they dont wanna bring back Ibaka/Gasol or wanna go a bit younger.

So my list of potential targets would be.

Demar Derozan
Otto Porter
Danilo Galinari
Brandon Ingram

Toronto will likely just negotiate 1 year deals with Lowry, Ibaka and Gasol depending on how they hold up this year. Resign Van Vleet to a longterm deal and give Siakam the max. Then try to be players for the 2021 free agent class.

 2020 isn’t the year to get cap space. By signing Lowry, they avoid that which helps them get cap space for 2021 instead as mentioned above.

Probably a win for both sides. Lowry gets probably his last big payday. Toronto sends a message that they look after their own. But it’s still tradeable if the right deal comes along (maybe even more so now that a team that wanted to trade for Lowry would have him under contract until 2021). Worst case scenario, it still comes off the books in 2021, when there could be a loaded free agency class.

 Does it signal we take care of our players…Maybe but see Derozen to how that goes..So it only marginally repairs that rep. I still don’t think players legit sign there…It would be funny if Kawhi came back after his two year deal is up with the LAC though and proves me worng though lol..

Does it give the Raptors cap room when there is better F.A’s in 2021 maybe …

But the question is do they really want to have a really old roster(NBA years) with Gasol,Ibaka and an a semi injury prone Lowry(see hand issue and draining fluid off elbow)..I also don’t know if I fully believe if Van fleet is a full time starter sort of reminds me of collison in NOLA behind CP3. 

The only young piece they can build around that they have is essentially Sikam..But I don’t honestly know if I fully see him as a legit fulltime 1,2 or 3rd option on a contending team.

If I was being honest they better off trading Lowry,Gasol and Ibaka for picks or maybe a young player now and embracing the tanking while these players still have some value post Championship..

I honestly see this deal as sort of thanks for not screwing up our one title run with Kawhi, which he could have pouted the whole time and asked for a trade or something of that nature. Ala the Westbrook deal when K.D bailed sort of move to try save face for when Kawhi left in their case…
