I look at Pau Gasol and I see the perfect post player, back to basket player that can use either hand and hit a jump hook with either hand. Why don’t college kids learn from this, I don’t get it.

You look at most college big men or even internationl(Donatas, Vesely) and these guys try to play like guards shooting three’s and if they get it in the post play facing up. It really is annoying, a good post player is unstoppable and helps your team so much. I look at a guy like Javale McGee and he has so much potential but he has no moves. I don’t get it.

Is there a lack of quality big men coach out there or is it just a mindset these kids have. This is just a pet peeve of mine.

Playing back to the basket isn’t fun.  Bigs would rather shoot 3’s and play out on the wing.  Back to the basket is the most effective way of scoring in the league, but it’s no fun to just bang and bang for most of these kids.

I agree with the idea that its a mindset younger bigs have now, where they want to float out on the perimeter. Yet the most effective big men in the league are those that make their livings on the block (Gasol, Duncan, Howard, Shaq, Lopez etc.)

Also I think its more about positioning yourself on the low block or somewhere near the basket in the post rather than playing purely with your back to the basket. The key is to have a variety of post up and face up moves that you can use at any time depending on the situation and defender. Pau and Timmy D both do this extremely well.

Its just been an evolution for big men to play more like guards.  Even great players like Garnett almost always faces up and shoots a jumper ( very effectively ) or drives.  Of course, it would be best if bigs knew how to face up and back down just as well ( like The Dream ).

I think quite a few NBA bigs "know" how to play around the basket, but its really not that easy. Pau is not only 7 feet tall, but he has an ability to shoot with such a soft touch with either hand while keeping the ball high. Most any other player shoots left hand hooks or spins away from contact and coaches will tell them to stop being soft and go up strong and then the kid abandons that finnese mentality.

The guys who tend to play inside now are often the defensive based guys who are fed dunks, it’s good to have big men who can shoot from 15 foot or beyond but an effective inside force and also be used on the pick and roll and can create openings for a team’s specialist perimeter players.

A lot of top big men have been involved in coaching and most of them were back to the basket type players so they can surely pass on these type of moves to the younger bigs. It’s not so much making a player something that he isn’t and sacrificing his strengths but about giving him options and helping to develop his game.

1 good example of a coach demanding his player play in the post is Cal at Kentucky..If you watch Cousins play when he was in high school..He hung out on the perimeter trying to imitate Magic Johnson…But Cal proved to him that if he wanted to be successful .the best play for him was in the post..Cousins listened and became a 1st Team All-American..

Most coaches are afraid of getting in a player’s face and tell him want he expects the player to do…

The coaches at Miss. State are trying to get Renaldo Sidney to stop hanging out on the perimeter and constantly jacking up 3’s..Will he listen to them?

I don’t get players like Sidney, why would you want to play outside like that. Those players never win championships. If they put as much work into a simple hook shot than they do shooting 3 pointers, they’d be so much better off. And those types of players never win championships, PF and C’s belong in the paint.

i dont get it either. im 5 foot 8 and when im at the ymca i constantly post up. even i am successful with pump fakes, up and unders, and hook shots. it is dirty down there but i thinks its fun. i like players that post up but they are becoming less and less. thats why i root for someone like cousins to do well. i think part of the reason big men float on the perimeter is that they see guys like lebron, durant, melo, and dirk(who are all big enough to play pf, dirk does) get all the glory on espn. but what they forget is tim duncan and shaq winning 8 of the last 12 championships. not to mention the other championship teams had pau gasol, kevin garnett or rasheed wallace posting up. come on big men, post up. u can still work on your perimeter game but get your bread and butter first.

But he has an potential to shoot with this sort of gentle touch with either hand whilst keeping the ball excessive. Most any other player shoots left hand hooks or spins faraway from touch and coaches will inform them to prevent being tender and pass up robust and then the child abandons that finnese mentality.
