 I wanted to open an idea I read on The Stepian for discussion on here.  The trade:

Chris Paul for John Wall + 2 First Round Picks (the years and protections would obviously be up in the air)

 

I know… it seems ridiculous at first.  Why would either team do this?  I’ll give my case for each team winning in this deal.

Thunder: 

– More draft assets to help in the rebuild

– Allows more room for young talent to take leadership roles and minutes

– Lack of other options after thorough trade exploration

– Will make the team worse for better draft position

– After Steven Adams and Schroeder’s contracts run out in two years they really won’t have any other major contracts on their books so Wall’s contract won’t really impact their long term plans.  You could argue that they should do everything they can to get cap space, but let’s be real… what major free agent is going to Oklahoma?

Wizards: 

– Gain a quality starting point guard and become competetive (although not a contender) in the East

– Lose what many have called the worst contract in the league

– From what I’ve read they really want to keep Bradley Beal.  This deal shows him that they’re serious about winning and could prevent him from requesting a trade in the near future.

Depends on whether Thunder see themselves in "rebuild mode" or "tank mode."

They’ve got so many first round picks lined up now, they may feel that quantity beats quality and they don’t need for their own picks to be high in the lottery. 

On paper they look like they could be at least a .500 team and maybe sneak into a playoff spot depending on how things shake out.

The problem is CP3 and Gallinari miss big chunks of every season, and if either of them sit the Thunder don’t have much firepower.

I think OKC will see how things look as the trading deadline approaches — if they’re clearly out of the running they might consider this trade and go into tank mode.

I think OKC could pull off getting rid of an insane contract while ending up with almost no money on the books and even, somehow gaining assets.

Westbrook gets $46 million in the 2022-2023. Man, Houston better win it all this year to make it worth it (doubt it). OKC turning $46 million into nothing would be crazy and is totally possible. 1st Westbrook to Houston for CP3 and some draft picks. 2nd (maybe) CP3 to Miami for Dragic and maybe an asset (if they’re lucky). 3rd send Dragic to playoff team for a terrible player on a terrible 1 year contract. Maybe get an asset. 

I actually think this is their approach and would be an incredible feat. I hope they pull it off because they don’t have a ton going for them.

 I  posted on the last CP3 thread that Wall was in the trade mix for OKC. I don’t think it’s a surprise, it’s one of the only other contracts as bad as his.

 It could be good for both teams, but not so much for Paul, I rather seeing him go to the Bucks to contend, as it also what Bucks need trying to challenge Sixers next season, as Bledsoe not the answer at all!

 A +1 for me as the idea does make sense and with Wall being out this year it allows OKC to potentially tank, it moves guys from Conference to Conference. The Wizards can look to compete out East and Thunder have possibility of getting Wall fit and playing for 2020/21 season.

Could the teams even look to push the trade further if Washington flipped Mahimi and fillers for Gallinari or even Adams. This could give Thunder further assets but if Washington got Adams then his contract runs for a couple more years so would be in sync with Beal’s and CP3’s would only have a further one year player option.

If Adams was moved then Thunder would likely ask for Hachimura as part of the deal and I don’t think he can be traded until 15th December.

But Gallinari could be thrown in for say Mahimi and Bertrans. The Wizards get a good 3rd option ( if he stays sound). The Thunder can use Bertrans to fill minutes Gallo would have played or flip him to a contender/buy him out early next year. Mahimi’s deal is $16 million so a buy out could be done for him and they save cap space on that.

I’m completely on board with expanding the trade.  This would increase the appeal for the Wizards and make the Thunder worse for the coming season… Win Win!  I’m not a big Hachimura fan, I haven’t seen a lot of him though.
