ORL gets: Serge Ibaka, James Harden

Obviously other pieces would need to be added to balance salaries, but you understand the gist of the deal. Am I crazy?

Kendall Marshall – The Phoenix Suns guard had a difficult night against the D-League Select team, scoring 10 points on just 4-14 shooting (missing all five three-point attempts).  Marshall had six assists but also three turnovers.  Arguably the D-League players have more experience and Marshall is just getting his feet wet but he still doesn’t look comfortable on the floor (something he would admit postgame).  Fortunately for Kendall, the Suns just inked Goran Dragic to start so that Marshall isn’t asked to do too much too soon.

Festus Ezeli – Golden State Warriors first-round pick (30th) Festus Ezeli had a tough game, going scoreless in 16 minutes.  He missed all four shots, pulled in just two boards while turning the ball over three times and committing four fouls.  On the positive side, Ezeli had three blocks in brief minutes and on the Warriors, he’ll be asked to come in behind Andrew Bogut to provide defense and toughness off the bench.  As a primary big, Ezeli didn’t look up to the task on Friday.

The 2008 first rounder turned into Ibaka, one of the league’s rising stars at the power forward position. Ibaka fits the mold perfectly for the Suns’ style of basketball. Even though his best years would have come after Nash’s prime, he still would have been a great piece to have a rebuild with. To lose him for nothing stings.

The only problem in all this is that two heavy hitters – Bogut and Curry – have had serious problems remaining healthy and staying on the court over the course of their careers. In that respect, Golden State has done a good job fortifying their roster to be two-deep at every position as reserves Carl Landry, Andris Biedrins, Richard Jefferson, Brandon Rush and Jarrett Jack have all been starters in this league.

In the NBA, the offseason is very often a time of change. Most teams keep their core together, making tweaks here and there. Some teams make huge, roster-shattering trades. Few teams, however, make the sweeping changes that we’ve seen from the Houston Rockets heading into the 2012-13 NBA season. One of the few returning Rockets is forward Patrick Patterson, and he tells HOOPSWORLD that getting names and faces down has been a challenge from the start of training camp.
