OhCanada-Participanthttps://www.nba.com/article/2019/12/20/nba-proposes-78-game-season-among-changes
So the NBA is proposing to change the NBA regular season to 78 games while adding a tournament which spans out throughout the season. Not sure how many games would be in the tournament. The winning team would split $15 million among the players and $1.5 million for the coaches. A 1st round pick would be granted to the winning team. Heres the details.
——————————————-
IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT
The proposal calls for teams to play eight divisional games in the group stage of the event, which would begin Nov. 24, 2021 and continue through Dec. 11. (The NBA said the dates are tentative.) The group stage games – four home, four away – would count toward a team’s regular-season total. The six division winners and two wild cards would qualify for the quarterfinals on Dec. 13 and 14, 2021. Semifinals would be played as a doubleheader on Dec. 16 and the title game would be played two days later – with the semis and finals at a neutral site like Las Vegas. Players on the winning team would split $15 million; the winning coaching staff would split $1.5 million.
The NBA said that there is the potential for “additional prizing for players on the remaining final four teams” and that other incentives for teams and fans were “to be determined.”
PLAY-IN TOURNAMENT
The regular season would end on a Saturday, one week before the start of the playoffs – as opposed to ending on Wednesday, as has been the case for years. The top six teams in each conference would be in the playoffs.
The teams in seventh through 10th place in the regular-season standings would play off as follows: The seventh- and eighth-place teams would play with the winner clinching the No. 7 playoff seed. The teams holding the ninth- and 10th-place regular season spots would also play, and the winner of that game would play the loser of the 7-8 game to determine the No. 8 playoff seed.
From there, the first two rounds would be played as usual. Once the playoff field is down to four teams, those clubs would be reseeded based on regular-season record.

OhCanada-ParticipantJust so everyone understands this is an absolutely terrible idea because its gonna make it so teams either go all out to compete in the tournament so they can tank in the regular season and compete n the playoffs or vice versa. So you’ll literally have teams just trying to compete in that tournament. And certain divisions are much stronger than others. Like the Atlantic Division vs the Central Division. its just a terrible idea.
Pretty cool that Silver is willing to mix it up though, gotta give him credit for thinking outside of the box but this just isnt it.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantI still think this is a ploy to get meaningful games that can be played around the world. Taking 8 teams (who will likely be among the best because they won’t give away regular season games to avoid it) to China, Japan, Europe, Middle East, or Australia for a week would be a way to showcase the league internationally. Starting it out in Vegas also makes sense, because it is an tourist town where they could make an All-Star break like event of it, and it won’t get the push back of the league announcing the quarters will be in Barcelona, the semis in Paris, and the final in London. My guess is that the players will ultimately prefer to keep the 82 games, and see how it goes on a one-year trial basis. I don’t think they will want to risk the lost money from every team giving up two home games.

bt102ParticipantI’ve thought it was a good idea but the players aren’t going to want to do it. I think they need to get rid of more games (maybe shorten the season to 74) to get some teams actually trying and then sweeten the winning prize with extra draft picks or a bye in 1st round of the playoffs so that the competing teams actually try.
I think playing into the playoffs is a good idea as well and that would be really entertaining to watch as well.

OhCanada-ParticipantOrganization prizes should be a combination of draft picks and cap relief. The winner should be given the choice of a 1st round draft pick, a trade exception and a tradeable amnesty clause which they gave every team in 2010 (it allows the team to buyout any contract). The runner ups should be able to choose from whatever is left and be rewarded as well.
