On the latest Viseland, my brother and I give a glimpse at how our Big Board’s stack up as we give our take on who we would take for each NBA team in a Mock Draft. Differing from our Lottery Mock 1.0 last week, where we predict which team would take which player, we give our opinion this time in this hypothetical Mock Draft.

What are you doing with the Jazz at 23? Why select Grant Riller when PG isn’t even a position close to what they need. They already have Conley and Mitchell there. And Ingles, all 3 are likely to stay. Maybe as a back up, but Bojan was out this year when the Jazz truly needed him in the playoffs. Besides him they were forced to use two players who have no business playing the 4 or was better off as a backup. So why not pick a position whereyou have 5 or 6 players at that position who all fit what the Jazz are looking for, still available and clearly better than Grant Riller. You’ve got Jalen Smith, Vernon Carey Jr., Tyler Bey, Daniel Oturu, Isaiah Stewart. Jalen Smith, I think fits really well and is I think still best available. He can shoot the three which you clearly need next to Gobert, he can block shots, good attitude, not the best passer but you have Conley, Mitchell and Ingles who can all pass very well, so you’d be fine not to go for a passing big man but a shooter who can defend as well and maybe spell Gobert as a backup too. That makes a lot more sense than Grant Riller who I think if the Jazz really like him then fine, work a trade out and select him in the second round when he should still be available. They’ve been needing a 4 since like 2018 I think but didn’t select one then or in 2019 because no 4 fit what the Jazz were looking for. Now you’ve got 5 players that all play the 4 that all fit what they need and they don’t select one??? Just makes no sense. And don’t forget many lottery teams like Smith, so if he’s still available and at a position the Jazz need, then it’s a no-brainer, you go for it.

SwatLake, thank you for the response. I can see you are very passionate about your Jazz, as are the people on my video who responded as well. One thing I will say is I did this Opinion Mock more off of my board than need and I will admit, I did not take enough into account of Utah having the biggest need at the 4.

One thing I will say is, I had Grant Riller on a higher tier than any of the bigs you listed. I think Riller can fill a similar potential role to Jordan Clarkson, for of course a rookie contract. He was a really great high volume finisher, was really good shooting off both of the catch and as a pull-up shooter. He also was incredible in the pick-and-roll. Now, it obviously goes on a case by case basis, but a lot of the time in the draft, I think it is best to go for the best player available. In this case, I had Riller in the higher tier, and was not going to go with need over that.

Free Agency is still where I feel most teams do address need, not to mention Jordan Clarkson being on the last year of his contract, where he could be used as a trade chip to get a forward. Mike Conley also is a FA in 2020-21 (no way he uses his ETO before that). Also, do not believe that Riller is relegated to just being a PG. Think he can play with any of the above listed players for Utah, even working well if Donovan Mitchell is on the ball.

I also get that many people love Jalen Smith for Utah, and have also heard the rumors he is possibly lottery bound. He is a good straight line athlete and has some vertical pop, plus showed shooting potential. However, I do have concerns defensively and in terms of him adding strength. He also seems to have some lateral issues and I am not very confident in him being an answer at the 4 spot, I think his future is at C.

In fact, the only player I see as a primary 4 in the players you listed is Tyler Bey. I do appreciate your opinion though, just wanted to clarify mine. I also do not think Utah will actually take Riller, just that I would absolutely consider it where they are in the draft the way my board is set up. Have confidence in Riller playing a role and providing a playmaking punch potentially. We will surely have more Mock Draft scenarios and I will go over some of my sleeper picks (Riller being one) and in the Mock Draft of what I think will happen with Utah in the conversation, will likely go with a big/4. Just hoping you get an idea of why I made such a pick for your Jazz, and I definitely appreciate the passion you put into your response.
