I take summer league with a slight grain of salt, but I still think it provides some insight into what prospects will have success in the NBA.

 

2019 NBA Summer League First Team

• Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Pelicans)
• Jarrett Allen (Nets)
• Brandon Clarke (Grizzlies)  – MVP
• Kendrick Nunn (Heat)
• Mitchell Robinson (Knicks)

2019 NBA Summer League Second Team

• Chris Boucher (Raptors)
• Rui Hachimura (Wizards) – still think it was worth it to trade all those picks Hawks fans when we could’ve had Hachimura? Looked strong and well rounded.
• Jaxson Hayes (Pelicans)
• Anfernee Simons (Trail Blazers) 
• Lonnie Walker IV (Spurs)

Other thoughts on prospects:

Overall I thought it was a fair list but Herro was absolutely robbed of being on one of those teams. He was fantastic and showed his ability to shoot, handle, pass and create. Defensively, he wasn’t bad either. Robinson also played well for Miami.

Trent Jr. had a few games where he really caught fire and looked good. Another solid one for Portland.

Barrett was really chucking it man. His jumper really needs to fall in order for him to live up. Brazdeikis looked great, appears to be a steal.

Malik Newman is a name people probably don’t remember, but this guy looked great out there. Should make the Cavs roster and carve out a nice role. He was so dominant in high school. 

Edwards looks like he can be a good NBA point guard and even a starter. He’s strong, shoots it well, and handles well. Celtics team was good.

LOL at everyone who said Naz Reid shouldn’t be drafted. He’s better than almost every second round pick and some late first round picks. Should’ve been a first rounder.

As a Hawks fan, our rookies looked pretty unimpressive. It’s summer league, so I’ll wait to make big conclusions, but it doesn’t seem to have been worth it to give up all those picks for Hunter. The one game Hunter played, he looked stiff. I know he hadn’t practiced yet so I give some leeway but I’ve never been impressed. Fernando was also disappointing, and he was a prospect I was high on…hopefully Cam ends up better than expected.

 Herro was impressive. Didn’t really get to show his full skill set at Kentucky. Showed the potential to be much more than a spot up shooter and has good ability as a ball-handler and shot creator. Only real question mark is defense. I kind of questioned whether he was worth a lottery pick going into the draft but now I feel like he might end up being a steal. 

Alexander-Walker looks like a steal. Long, versatile, can make open shots and make plays off the dribble. Should be able to guard at least 3 positions. Those guys tend to stick around the league and get paid (ex. Malcolm brogdon). 

Clarke was really good in summer league but I’m still a little skeptical about his nba fit at this point. The good news is that he is going into a situation where he’ll likely play a lot and his athleticism and motor should translate well. But long-term I think he’s really going to need to develop more of a defined skill set and develop his jumper. But the early signs were encouraging.

 Speaking on my Raptors Im impressed with how the developmental program is going. They just keep producing rotation players out of that system. Siakam, Van Vleet, Powell, Mckinnie. Our three returning guys Boucher, Lloyd and Miller look like they can fill a minor role in the NBA going forward.

The two new additions they got with the 59th pick Hernandez and undrafted Davis also look promising and like they maybe able to become NBA players. They were also roomates at the NBA predraft combine mini camp and have developed a good chemistry which should help their development in the 905.

Dewan Hernandez is an athletic big with a bit of versatility, bit of touch, willingness to pass and no hesitation shooting the 3 ball despite his jumpshot needing more in game polish. He said during his year off he had been watching alot of film on Pascal Siakam and trying to model his game after him so hes happy he will be able to play with him.

Terrance Davis is big and physical combo gaurd with a bit of a do it all game. Can get to the rim and find the easy passing lanes and hit open jumpshots. Hes also a very good rebounder for his size and for whatever reason he reminds me of a smaller less versatile Stephen Jackson with the way he plays.

Overall despite losing Kawhi I think people just seem to lose sight of how good and structured an organization Toronto is and Im not worried about them falling off too much without Leonard. They should still be competitive but might not have that final peice you need to win it all.

I guess I don’t know how Naz Reid didn’t make either of those teams, he had a great summer league. He’s no doubt the steal of the draft. There’s going to be a lot of teams wishing they would have drafted him in the first round, let alone the second round.

He fits in with new thinking Rossas brings over from Houston. Shooting 3’s is good.

I had him late first and people negged the hell out of me for it.

Eye test is real. Dude may not be the most athletic in terms of run and jump, but he moves well, knows how to play, and is super skilled. It’s not like this guy is a horrible athlete, he’s just not Brandon Clarke. Give me that type of player towards the bottom of the first round in a heartbeat.

 I had Reid late first or early second in the end, but he was firmly a first rounder for me by the eye test too. I was trying to get the draft right, so based on feedback and comments I had to keep sliding him down my board, but I was shocked when he didn’t go at all. I’m glad someone else sees what I see, was questioning why I thought highly of him. To me, especially at that age, he’s got a big body and knows how he can use it effectively. I knew he had the shooting touch, but the surprise for me in summer league was his passing. He made the right play out of the post, off the roll or pop almost every time.

Herro’s gonna be solid, it’s hard to put into words, he just made everything look easy. I got the feel I was watching Bradley Beal. But Herro and NAW have odd personalities as well, like JR Smith or Jason Williams, which is sketchy. On the other hand carsen Edwards does a lot of over dribbling, I see him as Norris Cole/Frank Mason.

Was thinking the same thing! His game is closer to Beal/Booker than JJ Reddick.

He doesn’t have the wingspans of those guys but does it REALLY matter if you hustle? He’ll be fine.
