So there are some complications with the Lakers salary cap now and potentially adding a third star this offseason. Now I totally get having a Big 3 in this era of basketball especially if they can add someone whos around Davis’ age therefore being set with a great duo for the next 5 or so years. However, depth usually hurts with a Big 3 even though teams with LeBron have always done decently at adding vets on minimums to fill out the roster who want to chase a ring. 

At this point however with the currently landscape I’m more so leaning towards them filling out the roster with some depth maybe using mostly one year contracts just in case they want to try again in free agency next year or flip those players for a trade before the deadline. Here is my major reasoning behind thinking depth wins out now though and its two fold.

1.) Depth helps counter-act injuries. LeBron is 34 and AD is injury prone. They just traded away a lot of players. If one of those two goes down having them plus for example Kyrie carry a team with not many other service-able players isn’t likely to go anywhere in the West. We saw this with the Warriors in the playoffs this year. Injuriers happen and its good to have some depth and insurance. Call me crazy but the Raptors also showed that a lot of depth can really make a difference especially once injuries kicked in. 

2.) The landscape of the NBA seems like its about to change. The Warriors will be down next year regardless. The West has some contenders but none strike me as a bigger threat than LeBron and AD + depth. The East has Milwaukee but they need to re-sign free agents, Boston seems broken up, Philadelphia has to re-sign and learn how to co-exist, the Knicks might build but thats no sure thing, and if Toronto loses Kawhi they won’t be the same.

This leads me to think that the Lakers should be patient and see how free agency starts to shake out. If they can get under the cap and grab someone like Kawhi or Kyrie they should do it in a second since it fits now and a future timeline. However, I don’t think it would be worth it for them to go all in with Butler, Kemba, Vucevic or the other expected max players if it sacrifices short term depth especially considering that it looks very possible right now to be the top team with out a Big 3 currently.

What do you guys think? Am I losing it? All in all either way it seems like they’ve set themselves up pretty well so far

They simply can’t afford to sign a 20 Million Dollar per year Deal (so that rules out all of the Top Free Agents looking for Big Bucks and Long Term deals)

The Lakers will have to try to sign Vets and younger players looking to re-establish their value

Veterans I can see them chase (Dudley, Ariza, Reddick, Teague, Wes Matthews)

Younger guys looking to establish themselves again (Nerlens Noel, Hezonja and Lamb)

They still need a starting level PG, starting SG, and starting Center

Wagner is not a starter, Bonga isn’t an NBA player IMO, they have Kuzma(who’d I’d play as a 6th man and NOTHING else on the bench)

They can try to resign KCP if he’s cheap enough, he can play SG, than I’d go for a PG who can shoot and defend

I guess they can go for Noel as a McGee replacement OR spend all the Cap Space on Vucevic???

That’s basically what the Lakers did for their other titles: Magic/Kareem, Shaq/Kobe, Kobe/Pau.

Kareem/Oscar and Jordan/Pippen were a couple of other dynamic duos that won titles.

Pelinka is dead set on creating a max slot, which is is doable if you look at Woj’s recent tweets, and they are going hard at Kawhi, Butler, Kyrie and Kemba.
