Was reading an article earlier on Basketball Insiders and they were saying that Philly was planning on offering a max contract to Tobias Harris. Now I’m a big fan of Harris, but do I like him at a max contract level? I’m not sure, it sounds like an overpay for mine. What do you all think?

 The Sixers kind of backed themselves into a corner trading so much for 2 expiring deals. I would argue they gave up more for Harris than they did for Butler, so they feel like they need to do whatever it takes to retain him. I think most people are in agreement that he isnt quite a Max player (including Philly), but in order for the Sixers to make sure of his return they may need to offer up that huge deal. Another thing to note is Harris is one of the best pick and roll players in the NBA and Brown struggled to fit that into the offense. I would imagine a lot of this summer, assuming his return, will be developing a system that plays to each of their big time players strengths. He may not have produced Max numbers yet, but if Brown can establish a system in which he thrives it could end up being worth it. I think the Raptors dismantling of Milwaukee and GS proved to the Sixers that they were actually really close this year, and they are going to spend to try to run it back. Hopefully Butler and Tobi buy in.

Overpay but then if I were a gm I probably wouldn’t have a good team because I constantly feel like guys are getting overpaid. I’d end up with bunch of scrubs and lots of cap space but no agents that’ll talk to me.

Yes but minus the racism aspect.  It wouldn’t be that I’m cheap , just I’m constantly left scratching my head at some of the deals that are handed out. But the true elites I’d pay all day.

 I have been on the fence about this for a while. In the truest sense no Harris probably isn’t worth a max deal. However when you consider the alternatives he just may be worth it for the Sixers. If the Sixers bring back Butler which should be their first priority you are already going to be pretty tight against the cap. 

The players that you already have and own the bird rights to are better than the players you could afford to bring in and replace them via free agency. Maxing out Butler and Harris will destroy the Sixers flexibility going forward especially if they give Simmons his max next year.

It just seems the most obvious move as I believe they will have a decent shot to win the title in the next 3 or 4 years.

I really like Harris, but he is not a max player. Close, but not max. I do believe he’s worth 21-23 million per year confidently.  

If I were the jazz I would free up money and make a big offer to him. His versatility as a scoring PF next to Gobert would give them that dynamic look in the playoffs they’ve missed the past couple seasons. 

I also kind of like Harris for the Mavericks, but that would contradict my Mavs idea I posted a month or so back (Mavs going all out to sign kemba and Randle)

• Not that this is a mavs thread…. but I just love the idea of Kemba with Doncic. Add Randle next to Porzingis in the front court, and that’s a seriously tough team to defend.

 Harris to the Jazz makes too much sense.  

 

Mavricks may be good offensivelry, but may have the worst defense in the league by a mile with that lineup.

Those might all be in the bottom 25% of defenders in the league at their position.

 I would not do a max for Harris.  I would do a 2 year deal for 42mil and let him have an option to opt out after the first year.

 What would be the max value of a deal for Harris – would it be $190 million over 5 years which I’ve seen mentioned for Butler who was drafted in 2011 the same year as Harris. But Butler is a 4 time All Star and has made to All NBA 3rd Teams whilst Harris hasn’t made one All Star game.

 They inda put themselves in a position where they have to pay him but Mike Scott played the same role and did a better job in the Raptors series. Pay him and trade him in the future sign Mike Scott to a longterm deal as well and ease him into Tobias role.

 Tobias Harris isn’t worth the max, but it’s likely what he’ll get. The Sixers will almost assuredly offer him the max out of fear he’ll leave. They dealt a lot of assets into getting Harris so I don’t imagine they would let money be the reason if he doesn’t return. Unless Harris is ok with signing for less for a bigger role on a good team he’ll get the max.
