 Dude just declined $30 million option from the Celtics and looking elsewhere. Celtics having a pretty bad offseason, unable to get AD, Kyrie likely leaving and now Horford leaving. What should be the next move if your Danny Ainge. Should you just rebuild with the youngsters or try to sign a veteran free agent an still be relevant in the East?

They are way under salary cap.  Even with gordon haywards bad contract, the cheap contracts on jaylen brown and tatum make up for it.

They also just saved $30mill on horford.

Derrick Favors plays better as a centre, I think he would be good for celtics.  Also used to play with Hayward.  Not sure whats happening with Rozier, but the league is loaded full of decent PGs

With Kyrie & Horford both looking to be out the door, they can now have close to $30M in cap space and can be a player in the FA or trade market. Ainge has to decide if they’re still trying to win right now or slow play it and give the young guys the keys and another year of development before trying to strike big. They have a good sized window thanks to the youth and talent of Tatum & Brown.

Hayward could be expendable now and they bring back Rozier at a reasonable #. Or they could look to get an instant upgrade at PG on the market and keep going for it while featuring Tatum more on offense and hoping Hayward regains some consistency.

He’s giving up 30 million to play one year of basketball, minus what he’ll be paid by his new team. I don’t get Horford or Harrison Barnes thinking. Neither one is going to get close to the kind of money they’re giving up. Do they just hate the teams they play for?

 With KD and Klay’s injury, these guys are taking advantage of teams that will miss out on the other star players ( E.g. Knicks maybe). Horford wants a 4 year deal which the C’s won’t offer.

 My guess is Horford has a 25 mill over 4 sort of deal lined up or if not that at least a deal that will give him more chance to contend…So losing 5 mill over 1 year but gaining 75 mill or at least 50 mill(as celtics probably would only give him 2 year deal) is why. He is maybe moving on.

Barnes 1 or 2 reasons:

Opt out and resign for longterm-Which I see the Kings maxing him out due to no one wanting to go there by choice..Don’t be surprised if the Kings max him out. If he is leaving though…My guess is he isn’t a Walton fan or the $ weren’t right..See Horford above to what I mean for $’s reason.

That could be a negotiating tactic to get the Celtics to come forward with a better offer.  However. if there really is a team willing to give Al 4yr/100mil then I don’t blame him for taking that deal.  Al is the ultimate professional and he’ll always get a warm welcome in Boston.  

I mentioned in a previous thread if Al and Kyrie are leaving, then Boston can get up to 27.8mil in cap space by renouncing all the free agents.  They can potentially get up to almost 30mil if they stash or trade 20 and 22.  The other option could be keeping Rozier’s cap hold which would leave them with about 19mil in cap space to play with.

phwoar.. who is giving Horford 4yrs/100? He’s still a very very good player, but what he is in 3-4 years is anyone’s guess. It would have to be someone with coin to burn.

Both Hayward and CP3 aren’t worth their salaries. So why not swap the two of them for each other and get fresh starts? The Celtics are going to need a point guard once Kyrie bails. CP3 provides a better passing, lower turnover option than what Kyrie was. Not to mention the trade clears up the logjam at the wing positon, giving Tatum and Brown free reign at 2 and 3.

Hayward relieves Houston from the CP3/Harden debacle and reduces their high salary commitment by one year (Hayward 2 years left, CP3 3 years left). They also get back another shot creator when Harden is sitting.

I like that move for HOU. Hayward is going to look closer to the player he was in Utah this season. 

I don’t love it for BOS though simply because I don’t know if Paul’s leadership style would resonate well with Tatum & Brown.

They should use this extra space, try to flip Heyward for Chris Paul, sign DeMarcus Cousins, and see if you could swap brown/Smart and a pick for Bradley Beal. That might blow up in their face a year or two down the road but at least they’ll have two young players to carry the team in the future in Tatum and Beal plus two potentially helpful with now players in Paul and Cousins.

 Boston still have a young core of Tatum, Smart, Brown, Rozier ( I assume he is resigned if Kyrie moves on) plus other decent young players, 3 first rounders this year, Hayward will be another year on from his injury and his form should improve.

They also have a top level coach in Brad Stevens and an elite FO run by Danny Ainge. If at worse they hold fire and see how the younger guys develop and then Hayward’s contract gets off the books or they even stretch him or trade him then they’ll have options to retool fairly quickly.

I could see them using cap space to sign a decent vet or two on one or two year deals to allow second contract flexability for Brown, Tatum and future cap space.

They may slide back to 6th to 8th seed but they will merely be playing the long game.

 Like he’s the one guy, heck maybe even be an upgrade over Horford. He’s like a young Horford, he just keeps getting better. He might be less of a defender, but he can score, rebound, pass, and has added a three point shot. He’s not a fit next to Zion.

We’ll miss Horford, but four years 100 million is too much for this Celtic team right now. It’s youth movement time. Good for him though, get that money. Just highly surprised a team with cap space would use that much on Horford.

 If Al Horford doesn’t resign then the Celtics should fully embrace their youth movement. They shouldn’t try to sign any top free agents and maybe try to grab younger free agents with skill sets that mesh well with the rest of Boston’s current players.
