Giannis, the guy who could’ve likely fueled the biggest free agency sweepstakes since the decision, put the speculation to rest and signed a 5 year max extension with Milwaukee. Despite it being a small market, he seems to genuinely like playing in Milwaukee and seems to feel a responsibility to try to bring a title there. This is no doubt a massive win for bucks fans.
The question now is whether he can actually win a title there. This is franchise that has dominated the regular season the past years, but roster deficiencies and a lack of flexibility have derailed them in the playoffs. This is not a market that would generally be a destination for major free agents, so the idea of recruiting a second complimentary star to play with him might not be feasible. This is also a front office that has not shown a willingness to spend into the luxury tax in the past. So there is a possibility that the bucks fortunes will rest solely on Giannis and how much he can elevate his game and his teammates. You could argue he is definitely taking the harder route to a title, but you have to commend him for staying loyal to the team that drafted and developed. But will it ultimately cost him the opportunity to win the ultimate prize while he is in his prime? We will see.

Interesting topic… Within the 5 years of his deal, he should get 1 championship. He has a good core to work with to get there, but of course it’s not a guarantee being that there are a few other elite teams out there. But being an MVP talent in this league and having the pieces to help out is within his reach probably during his contract. This year might not be the year quite, but you can’t count them out either. Next year, Jrue will have played their a year and that I think would be the best window Giannis would maybe have though. I think he gets it sometime in his contract, maybe if Brooklyn has their core injured again or the L.A. scene is a different landscape come the time he reaches the finals.

Sure he can. He’s arguably the best player. Playing for arguably the best coach. He’s got a second all-NBA level guy in Middleton. Holiday and Lopez are really good.

DiVincenzo is kind of the x-factor for them, I think. Can he be as good offensively as Kendrick Nunn or Tyler Herro? If so then Milwaukee can field a closing lineup of five guys who can all score and defend really well.

On the other hand the East is suddenly pretty tough. Boston, Miami and Brooklyn, at least, look like they’ll be in the mix to get to the finals for the next several years. So it’s possible Milwaukee will miss out despite having a really good team (just like in the ’80s).
