Im 23 now but at 18 I started out in Business at 20 i got an asociates in English at 22 1/2 i got my Bachelors in English and now at 23 im back in school for Criminal Justice. The problem is that i still dont even think this is what i want to begin a career in.

This is a question for the older members of the site(those in college or that have finished)

What was your intended major coing out of high school ?

What did you endup getting your degree in?

i went to college out of highschool simply becasue that was what i was supposed to do but i didnt have any idea what i wanted to do. I ended up majoring in english becasue i enjoyed the classes and thought that maybe i could develop into a writer and maybe write about sports, but i was still not sure about anything. I eventually dropped out after 3 1/2 years of college and just worked labor jobs full time. A year ago i started going back to school taking water science classes hoping to get into that industry. I luckily landed a job with the water district back in february and my work now pays for my college to further my education in the field. I have a hydraulics class starting tommorow that is all math. Not gonna be fun.

However, I have it under good authority that is a waste of time, as a Bachelors in Physics is sometimes considered more useful than a Ph.D in the same field. Might save myself some time/money and go down that route instead.

If not, I would decide between English and Computer Science. Computer Science offers a big job market that is always growing. Works in both the short-term and the long-term. English is a good option too. Would love to get into literature. If English is my major, I would try to minor in both Sociology and Illustration.

Interesting to see a different side of some users. Anyway, I came out of high school planning on majoring in Accounting and I am now a senior on track to graduate with an Accounting degree, but I still don’t know what I want to do. I just wish I could be a NBA GM.

Don’t major in English unless you have a few connects in what ever industry you want to go into. Otherwise, it is useless unless you want to teach.

You’re probably right. Besides, I’m not even sure I need a degree in English to pursue a writing career. As a bonus, Computer Science would give me something to fall back on.

College and the decisions you have to make aren’t easy. As I’m sure you see at school, some people just simply know what they want (and can) do with their degree so they go for it from day one. Others, like yourself and I, just have to wait for the lightbulb to come on.

I ended up choosing collision repair and refinishing but my community college won’t let me in heres the summary(posted in aamirs whos ready for school post)

some background info about me, I was born in Italy but grew up in US all my life, and I have a dual citizenship in US/Italy

1. I have to pay out of state tution despite being legal and living in the state for 8 years

2. I will be accepted on the first day of class, which i can sign up for whatever is left after everyone else pcisk their classes

3. If by any chance I sign up for the last spot of a class, and their is an american who does late registration and wants to sign up for the same class, they will drop me from it and give it to him.

so i basically now im just getting a regular job and going to learn autobody work and painting on my own, and advance from there.

Mcbased, Most people don’t know what to major in, or what they want to do for a living i think its pretty normal, my advice is just keep learning different things that interest you and maybe one day you will combine all your knowledge and combine into an awesome idea, your still young so you have plenty of tiem, and all your degrees and skills will attract potential employers. yeah, I actually started pursuing a 2nd degree in Computer Information Systems a few years back (since my job pays for school), but had to drop out due to time restraints.  so I have come full circle.  my advice is….dont worry about how much money a career path makes…enjoy school and major in something that you love and keeps your interest.

Just keep talking some classes and see what kind of classes you like.  I went to college and got all my generals done, then kept taking classes in journalism and some business classes.  I ended up taking a year or so off and working construction to decide what I wanted to do.  11 years later I am still doing those construction jobs and will never go back to school.  My advice is don’t take time off to decide most people end up never going back to school.  I wish I would have kept taking classes I would have eventually found something.
