Who will be the better pro?

Both are seniors, both are wing players. Johnson is a better offensive player, but Thybulle is a better defender who has also shown competency as a 3-point shooter. (The most important skill for role players in today’s league). Who’d ya got?

True story, there is not a Warrior in this series other than Curry or Thompson who can be relied on to make a three, and they are overwhelming Portland.

Lol. You’re going to point to this series as evidence that 3pt shooting in role players is overvalued?  This series could actually be interesting if Aminu and Harkless could reliably hit 3-pointers. My statement about the importance 3 point shooting is perhaps a bit incomplete, indeed perimeter defense is equally as coveted in role players…But it’s not wrong, it’s not even controversial.

 Johnson, Thybulle is too much liability on offense, he barely can dribble and he’s a guard, Danny Green type player becoming unplayable in today game when playoff comes…

 People talk about Cam being 23 and having already reached his ceiling.  Who cares, because his ceiling is already really good.  He was probably the best three point shooter in college this year.  He’s a solid defender that averaged 1.5 steal a game.  He can rebound and he’s not a terrible athlete.  He can already come in as a rookie and be an elite shooter.  He has a super quick release.  I think he can have a long NBA career and maybe start one day.  I believe he was a 2 star recruit coming out of high school.  He’ll be a first round pick this year and has done pretty good for himself.

 Cam Johnson in the 1st round? That be a reach. Nice shooter. At this point, he’s just a catch and shoot player, with no latteral movement to play defense, not a shot blocker and no handles to be a play maker. I doubt his game improves much. No reason to draft him in the 1st round. Cam is a late 2nd rounder at best. I’d sign him as a undrafted free agent.

 I prefer Cam because his shot is way better. Defense is important but three point shooting has more value to me….as long as you can hold your own defensively.

 I think Thybulle will be the better pro I think he is the best or one of the best on ball defenders in this draft.  He is also a good team defender.  Johnson is a good shooter, but is not a go to scorer he is going to be a role player offensively.  I will take the lockdown defender over the role playing shooter anyday.

Cam Johnson is going to be a high quality role player or fringe starter. Matisse Thybulle is an elite defender and reminds me of Danny Green or Bruce Bowen. Thybulle shot 40.5% from 3 on 4 attempts per game as a sophmore, so the shot is there, although it fell to 30.5% as a senior. However, he used all his energy on D his final two seasons in Washington and didn’t put emphasis on developing an offensive game. Cam benefitted from a great system that spotlighted his strengths and hid his weaknesses. Until their senior seasons, Thybulle was arguably the better shooter. Matisse also shot 85% on FT whereas Cam shot about 82%. This suggests that Thybulle will be a good shooter in the NBA and I wouldn’t necessarily give the nod to Cam simply for shooting. Plus, they say shooting is the easiest thing to add. Either way, the Spurs will take one of them with the 29th pick and turn them into a 10+ season rotation player or starter.

Solid stats. I also give Thybulle the nod and desperately hope the Spurs draft him. He needs a coach that will allow him to roam as a defender in certain situations.

To me, Johnson is a sure thing: he’s going to be a guy who carved out a role as a shooter in the league. He’s good enough at the other things that he won’t be a liability.

When I watch Johnson I see a guy who can knock down NBA 3s right now. He had terrific range and an effortless shot. He combines good height and length with a quick release, meaning he will be able to get it off against NBA defenses.

I don’t know if he’ll ever be a star or anything like that, but I think he’ll play in the league for a long time.
