 Well this is interesting. He’s been showing a jumpshot and faceup footwork in workouts. Theres video’s on YouTube of him showing a pretty consistent shot, with versatility. Step backs, fade aways, jab steps etc. In his team workouts he has been emphasizing how he wants to display his jumpshot and dribbling and he sounds pretty confident.

I never actually seen him attempt a three but he shot it 30% in limited attempts in college and 76% free throws. Quite the development for my mock draft to be honest. If teams believe he can shoot how high can he go? Apparently Hawks are interested doubt he slips past Charlotte. Washington is also a possibility.

 There’s such a huge difference in opinions on him. Like close to lottery to second round. I have no clue what to think. He certainly didn’t have the crazy athletic numbers I was expecting.

 I think he could develop a consistent mid range jump shot, don’t see a 3 point range with him though, he’s a old school type big that should play more inside, I see a lot Moses Malone in him…

 Wasn’t there footage of Ben Simmons shooting jump shots in practices leading up to his draft? I take a lot of these workout videos with a grain of salt. They can be misleading.

I just watched the workout and came away impressed. His stroke looks pure and he looks comfortable with it.

To the comment above me, I have NEVER seen a video where Ben Simmons was shooting a straight jump shot that looked pure.

I’m a pretty big believer in pre-draft workouts – the eye test is real. Obviously it can be deceiving, but I always point back to Kristaps pre-draft workout (I seriously recommend giving it a watch if you have a moment). It was and still is so impressive to me. 

I’ve heard that Darko Milicic had an incredibe pre-draft workout though…we see how that turned out.

Cody Zeller, Frank Ntilikina, and Stanley Johnson impressed a lot of people with pre-draft workout shooting. It has never appeared in games. Ben Simmons makes shots in empty gyms.

Some of us will never forget that Yi Jianlian dominated the chair.

Workouts where players compete with one another are incredibly beneficial. I don’t think a pre-draft shooting or drill work tells you anything more than a QB going into a pro day and throwing pressure-less throws in a dome to old teammates and the ball never hitting the turf. It is catered to show a side of a player that they want to present.

 I agree with this, Jakob Poeltl also showed shooting in workout scenerios. Pascal Siakam showed shooting as well and it took three years for him to develop a jumpshot that was translatable to NBA games. However the thing about Bruno Fernando and the guys I mentioned is they arent guys who need a jumpshot to have successful NBA careers. Teams seem to believe they will be getting some sort of an energy big like Clint Capela/Montrelz Harrell and be an anchor. If they believe he can also stretch the floor and defend like Myles Turner but also be able to rebound Im wondering what his value is currently.

His highest scheduled workout is Atlanta from what I checked out yesterday. But if he’s good for Atlanta realistically what would be stopping him from going 4th or 5th in this draft? Might sound crazy now but in 5 years is it that farfetched to think he could be a better player or as good as Culver/Garland/Hunter? I think hes a guy to keep an eye on.

That Ben Simmons video still shows a terrible jumpshot. It has no fluidity at all and is by no means pure. That isn’t translatable. 

Back to Bruno, if you watched the video, his shot was fluid and he looked confident with it even with defenders present.

Totally understand and that’s a valid point about those other guys. I will say I never thought Johnson or Ntilikina would be good shooters (their shots are far from picturesque), but I did think Zeller would become a much better shooter in the NBA. Yi showcased his ability to shoot, but never put it all together. None of them are the physical specimen that Fernando is though, and he plays with a great motor.

 This site has him in the lottery, NBA Draft Room has him at 27, ESPN and The Ringer have him in the second round. That might be the biggest range in the draft, I don’t think another player is lottery to second round that I’ve seen.

 I’ve got him 4-12. Right now I think his realistic range is 8-12 but he could rise. I doubt he gets past Charlotte.

i’m not sure if it changes too much of the narrative on fernando.  if he’s stepping out and shooting from perimeter, it takes away from one of his bigger strengths in being that brute, offensive rebounder.  at the end of the day, fernando is still a plodder and would have struggles in the playoffs and fast paced style of new nba.  i think inclusion of moses brown, claxton and siminac will muddy fernando’s first round chances as well.

i still think someone takes him at back end of first.  he’s a much better version of kendrick perkins and looks to really have a good work ethic.  has potential to be a good rotational player.

Not really. He is one of the most effective “bigs” in college. He moves his feet so well. He’s the guy you wish kwame Brown had continued to develop and become. He’s fundamentally sound as a defender.  Furthermore!, I made a comment at the end of last year about him having a three point shot after reading an interview where he mentioned that he could hit from range. 

 

Honestly, his upside is a tougher Dewayne Dedmon imo. Better offensive rebounder and back to the basket player. But he could really carve out a role in a title team as a Dedmon.

What do you think about the Hawks possibly drafting him. They have a workout scheduled if it wasnt already today. I think as stated above a better Dwayne Dedmon could be his future which would really be  perfect fit for Atlanta.

Would like that pick a lot for my Hawks. Way more than Jaxson Hayes – Fernando can walk in tomorrow and make an impact for any NBA team.

 With some development and patience I think he could turn out to be one of the best bigs in the class. I think his ceiling is as high as anyone’s maybe other than Bol.
