     I love Ben Simmons’ skillset. His all around game fascinates me. He’s only going to get better as his career progresses. What pisses me off is the fact that he seems to undermine the importance of having a midrange game. He seems to be afraid or tends to hesitate too much on even attempting a J. In the playoffs, he’s gonna need those weapons in order to go deep. As good of a facilitator as he is, his midrange and outside game keeps him out of the elite conversation.

    He’s a liability on the floor offensively, especially when the ball isn’t in his hands. 

    The 76ers might be in trouble. Significant mismatches in the backcourt.

     If I was Ben, I could’ve used certain regular season games to attempt a couple of J’s and see where I’m at. He couldn’t even dare to attempt unless the shot clock’s going down.

    The only jump shot he seems to be comfortable taking is a turn around jumper which is absolutely ridiculous considering where he is in his jump shot development. Turn around jumpers are harder than normal jump shots, Ben doesn’t shoot well, and yet he takes turn around jumpers more than any other jump shot. Ben should be attempting spot up jumpers and occasionally dribbling into range easy jump shots. I don’t know who is teaching/advising him on what shots to take, but they’re doing him a serious disservice at the moment.

    To me he has a touch of Andrew Wiggins’ mindset — he has a world of talent and ability, but he’s not a killer. There’s no chance Simmons will ever be the guy taking game winning shots or carrying a team offensively in the playoffs.

    He’s going to have a good career, I’m sure, but five years from now fans will be frustrated with him. He’s not yet improved any aspect of his game in any shape, form or fashion, and he’s content to lose to the Brooklyn Nets and take four shots and go 0-fer at the free throw line.

    It’s just a matter of time before that gets old.

    Lowery had an opportunity to score zero points. We did not.

     Brooklyn is a danger team. Caris Levert is a real problem, and Dinwiddie gives you no rest when he comes in. Harris, Carroll, Allen – these guys know their roles. 

    In saying that, Philly needs to play with a bit more movement. Tobias Harris and JJ Redick both did little to trouble the scorers. Ben only plays well when the game is flowing because he is a passer rather than a shooter, as everyone knows. It’s the playoffs and they have Embiid, but he needs to try push. If the Nets slow it down, he has to take whoever is on him low and make them defend dirty work as a 4.

     I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Ben Simmons is a 6’10 Rajon Rando, world of versitility and defensive prowess, a shocking liability as an offensive player.You cant be a superstar if you cant shoot at all.

     If teams know that Ben cannot shoot then they can almost wait to anticipate the pass or take a step back from him and ensure he cannot drive to the basket. With his height advantage over all PGs the other team will likely have to put an SF sized guy to guard him creating other size mismatches. Ben’s height would allow him instances to get a clear shot off too.

     They could get way better trading him. But honestly been saying it all year Joel is not built to last a playoff run. He is not fit for it. He will never be fit for it. Philly should sell high in off season on both or one of these guys. They will not beat Bucks or Celtics anytime soon.

    Redick and Tobias Harris can certainly shoot from long range, as can Butler and Embiid to a certain extent. Simmons can get to the rim off the dribble with his gigantic and turbo athletic body even with defenders sagging off, which draws help defense, he makes backdoor cuts and gets lobs, and he gets on the offensive glass for putbacks. He is also adept at finding kickouts and dump-offs when he gets in the paint. And he’s pretty nifty at finding steals or turning defensive rebounds into transition opportunities, where he is a freight train.

    This is still a 17-9-8 guy with incredible length defending the perimeter. His combination of size and skill still makes him an imposing force. Yes, there is a glaring hole in his repertoire, but let’s not overreact to one game.

    What’s crazy to me is that Simmons almost seems to be regressing in his willingness and desire to shoot the ball. If you go back and watch his high school highlights there are clearly instances of him hitting pull up threes of the dribble. Granted, he didn’t shoot a high volume or percentage but he at least wasn’t completely allergic to the occasional jumper. There wasn’t really anything to suggest he couldn’t at least develop into an adequate shooter as he got older. When he got to college though, it was almost like he made the conscious decision to completely abandon that part of the game.
