Player of The Week
Reed Sheppard– Guard, Kentucky- On Tuesday night against Miami, Sheppard blew up with a huge game putting up a game high 21 points following a leg injury to teammate DJ Wagner. Sheppard helped the Wildcats build a large second half lead, going 9-13 from the floor and knocking down 5-9 from 3. Reed has had a great week shooting the ball. While he only shot once against St Joe’s, he scored 25 points and hit seven threes against Stonehill. Against Marshall, he scored 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. Despite being undersized,, in the 6-1 to 6-2 neighborhood, Reed has provided a huge spark off the bench as of late and has put himself on the map as a potential 2024 draft prospect.
Freshman of The Week
DJ Wagner– Guard, Kentucky- DJ had his best all around game against Marshall. He scored a career 28 points to go along with five assists and three steals. Against St Joe’s, he posted a stat-line of 22 points, six assists and three rebounds. Improving his outside shooting ability remains the final piece to the puzzle to unlock his potential.
Who’s Hot
Tramon Mark– Guard, Arkansas- Tramon had an incredible game against North Carolina, scoring 34 points on 13 of 17 shooting from the field. He hit four of his six attempts from deep and grabbed five rebounds. He has scored 20 or more points in three of his last four games. He had a scary fall landing on his tailbone, which required him to be taken off the floor on a stretcher, but the injury turned out not to be serious, fortunately.
Josh Hubbard-Guard, Mississippi State)- Hubbard found a ton of success this week scoring the ball. Against Northwestern he scored 29 points, following this up with 15 points and 17 points in his next two games off the bench.
Who’s Not
Vanderbilt- Vanderbilt lost both of their games this week to NC State and Arizona State. They find themselves tied at the bottom of the standings, but have some winnable games coming up this week.
The Conference “Elite”- All the top teams faced off against other highly ranked teams and did not find much success. Tennessee lost to both Purdue and Kansas. Arkansas lost to Memphis and North Carolina. Kentucky lost to Kansas. Each team faced elite competition and did not fair very well.
Top 5 SEC Shooters
1. Reed Sheppard– Guard, Kentucky- Sheppard has upped his scoring average to 12 ppg following his 21 point performance in UK’s blowout win over Miami. He’s averaging a scorching 63% from three on the season so far having knocked down 19 of 30 (2.7 of 4.3 per game)
2. Nick Honor– Guard, Missouri- Nick has shot the lights out this season for the Tigers. He has hit half of his attempts from deep while averaging six attempts from deep. Nick has consistently been counted on to hit big shots this year and has come through.
3. Antonio Reeves– Guard, Kentucky- Antonio leads the conference in attempts per game with 7.8. Despite the high volume, he is shooting 44%. Reeves has hit five threes twice already this year, and has the potential to do it every night.
4. Aden Holloway– Guard, Auburn- Holloway is another high-volume shooter shooting 42% on seven attempts per game. Aden should continue to let it fly as he has earned the green light.
5. Josh Hubbard-Guard, Mississippi State- Even though he comes off the bench, Hubbard has shot the ball a ton, averaging 6.5 attempts per game. Despite the volume, he converts about 41% of the time.
