  1. Max vs Standing Vertical
The disrenpency between standing jump and running jump is due to size and weight, the heavier players benefit less from the running start. These stats only state how high a player can jump not how long it took them jump and hit the target so i don’t see how you can say
“This probably means he can get up faster for rebounds than his opponent”.

  2. Not really
The difference is just players who are more explosive after building momentum before their counter movement of the vert jump. It also depends on how you train. Take chase, who is thanks to his volleyball background is more comfortable stepping into a jump as apposed to just brute strength straight vertical. The momentum factor is why most combines don’t even consider it true vertical if you take a step. I mean if you look at it, majority of the guys, no matter of size gained about a extra 5-7 inches just from taking the step. Pyscho T went from 27 to 34 and hes a heavier player while flynn went from 33 to 40. Its basic reactive strength vs absolute strength.

  3. Max vs Standing Vertical
I’m one who always underplays the numbers and claims we should look at how players perform during the game. However, I just checked out jumping numbers from another website where they used slightly different measurements and noticed something very interesting about B. Griffin. There are two vertical jumping scores, one standing still and one where you can take steps.

Blake Griffin only had a 3.5 inch difference between the two. I think it was a 35.5 max vertical and 32.0 inches standing. I didn’t look at every player, but that small difference was one of the best scores when comparing the two types of jumps. This probably means he can get more rebounds than his opponent.

I was also surprised to learn that Luke Harangody had only a 4 inch discrepancy, that’s another excellent score. Maybe that’s one reason why he’s such a good rebounder?

By the way, I think Harangody and Griffin were 1-2 on the bench press, and both players did surprisingly well with the agility drill.

One of the jumping surprises was Budinger who had an impressive Max Vertical of 38.5 inches, but his Standing Vertical was 9 inches lower. I don’t know what that means, but it was one of the biggest discrepancies I noticed.

  4. This probably means he can get more rebounds
Thanks to Shohoku and bron42 for excellent contributions. Allow me to respond to Shohoku’s question about my rebounding statement when I wrote, “This probably means he can get more rebounds than his opponent”.

The majority of rebounds are snared under the basket from a standing position, usually when a player is boxing out, as opposed to getting a running start from the foul line. Therefore, if you can jump higher from a standing position, you’ll probably have the edge more often than not.

For example, Budinger has an incredible 38.5 max vertical, but his standing vertical is only 29.5 inches. Blake Griffin has a lower max vertical than Budinger, but a higher Standing Vertical. In my opinion, if Blake was boxing out Budinger, that higher Standing Vertical would give Blake an edge in grabbing the rebound.

Of course there’s a lot more that goes into rebounding than one’s vertical jump. Three of the best NBA rebounders were guys who couldn’t jump six inches off the ground.
