Day 3 Games

The action heated up on Sunday as the eight teams began
elimination play with the U18 quarter-finals and semi-finals. The quarterfinals
featured a battle between Team Canada and Team Latin America. The Canada squad
with the main three players who won the adidas 64 in Las Vegas, Tristan
Thompson
, Junior
Cadougan
and Myck Kabongo could not keep up with the experience and steadiness
of Latin backcourt of Jayson Granger and Vitor Benite.

Jayson Granger

Granger of Uruguay is the son of an American who played pro
ball in Uruguay is a tank of a 2guard with great passing and court sense. He lacks
a true position at the NBA level, but already plays at a high level and should
have a nice career in Europe. NBA scouts were taking note of him. Benite epitomizes
the Latin American "soccer" style of basketball. He rarely makes mistakes
and his vision and passing and overall understanding of the game appear ahead
of most of the opposition.

Cadougan, a Khalid El-Amin clone had a tremendous July and was solid here but
unable to lead his team to glory the way he had in Vegas. Thompson had a solid
showing as well, cementing his place among the top 3 in the Class of 2010.

Coached by former NBA coach Frank Johnson, Team Latin America went on a 18-4 win
to end the game beating Canada by 8.

The final four ended up being the Team Latin America, Team Europe, Team USA 2010
and Team USA 2009.

Semi-final Games

USA 2010 96 – Team Europe 92

In the night cap, the two Semi final games turned out
to be great match ups. The 2010 team got out to a quick start against the Europe
squad who was missing their athletic wing Tomas Satoranski. USA 2010 sat their
stars for the first 8 minutes and actually built a lead behind the solid play
of Trey Zeigler and Jared Sullinger. The stars for 2010 (Tony
Wroten, Jr.
, Brandon
Knight
and Joshua
Smith
) entered the game and the European team actually mounted a come back
to take a 38-34 lead at the half.

For Europe, Tomislav Zubcic made some key shots as did Turkish center Denis Kilicli.
Point guard Ray McCallom’s quickness and playmaking ability was tough for Europe
to contain.

Trey Zeigler

Serbian guard Andreja
Milutinovic
got out on the break and attempted a throw down on Brandon Knight,
a nice display of his athleticism but the ball went off the back of the rim. Milutinovic
has been a disappointment struggling to hit anything after such an impressive
showing in Madrid (Euro F4) in May.

In the second half, the inside duo of Joshua Smith and Jared Sullinger went to
work and the Europe guys had no response. Tony Wroten and Brandon Knight began
to take over making plays from the perimeter as they built a double digit lead.

Sophomore wing LaQuinton Ross, who has been very quiet all week woke up with a
number of solid plays scoring on a variety of drives and buckets around the basket.

Europe made a valiant comeback behind the superb coaching of Detlef Schrempf,
closing it all the way to 2 points in the closing seconds after a Nicolo Melli
3 pointer, but in the end USA 2010 pulled out the win.

USA 2009 86 – Team Europe 85

As exciting as the Euro-2010 semi-final was, the 2009-Latin
semi was even closer. The 2009 bunch were missing their two headliners as Derrick
Favors had left in the morning to head back to school. Lance Stephenson missed
the game for undisclosed reasons but was sitting on the bench.

The gritty Latin team pulled out to a lead early and led for most of the game
holding a 10 point (48-38) lead at the half. Granger showing great leadership
and basketball understanding brought the ball up and found teammates with nice
passing and timely outside shooting throughout.

For the USA squad, Louisville bound Peyton Siva came to the rescue with a number
of second half drives and buckets to keep things close.

Things got interesting in the final five minutes as the game became tied and the
teams traded baskets with Granger showing a lot of heart.

With 10 seconds left, down by 1, guard Dexter Strickland brought the ball up.
He was determined to take the ball all the way to the rim and ran into a Latin
defender on the way in. The ref called a foul which easily could have been a charge
but the call went in his favor. With 4 seconds on the clock Strickland went to
the line and knocked down both shots for the win.

Conspiracy theorists might suggest that someone wanted the two USA teams to meet
in the finals, but unfortunately without Favors, the 2009 team lacks the same
punch.

Regardless, the 2010 vs 2009 match up should be very entertaining on the final
day.

Gani Lawal

The college guys were over halfway through their game when
the U18s wrapped up. DC and Holiday continued their superb play drawing scouts
to say that UCLA was going to be a handful next season with such great ball control.

The highlight of the session was Gani Lawal going baseline and dunking right on
Cole Aldrich. Lawal is definitely looking stronger prompting one scout to say,
"I didn’t like him last year, but he’s looking great here".
