Only NBA players suiting up are Chris Boucher, Khem Birch, Kelly Olynyk and Kyle Wiltjer. Nobody wants to play FIBA basketball its just useless at this point too much risk associated with it and no reward aside from pride and honor. But is pride and honor really worth that $170 Million contrct Jamaal Murray just signed?

Same with the U.S. team I’m sure all those guys would play at the olympics. But with the way FIBA has setup their tournaments in a Soccer styled format also these guys just arent interested.

The sad day when Kelly Olynyk is your best player.

Pretty sure he wont be playing but international Olynyk is a whole different beast than the NBA version. Same with Wiltjer to some extent. Kinda like Linas Kleiza back in the day with Lithuania.

Khem Birch probably wont be playing either. Boucher’s situation is different because he is currently in a development cycle so Toronto will likely veiw this as a great way to have him play some meaningful ‘non G-League’ minutes, plus they are a Canadian team so it just makes sense.

The sadder day: When your best player Kelly Olynyk hurts his knee and is scheduled for x-rays tomorrow.

Pretty obvious why so many have pulled out, injured in a meaningless Fiba game.

No one gives a damn about FIBA when you play  in the NBA…high risk low reward..BUT the Canada team should be lit next summer!

I personally think hed be one of the best on a full roster, not sure why hes not in the NBA. Fully expect him to have a great showing and get some NBA interest. Not sure what his contract situation is in Russia though.

     List of Canadians not playing:

Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins, Ignas Brazdeikas,Tyler Ennis, Andrew Nicholson, RJ Barret, NAW, SGA, Dwight Powell, Nic Stauskas, Tristan Thompson, Trey Lyles, Dillon Brooks, Brandon Clarke, Luguentz Dort, Marial Shayok, Kabengele, Mitrou-Long, Anthony Bennett, Tyler Ennis, Olivier Hanlan, Andy Rautins, Xavier Rathan-Mayes, Justin Jackson, Olu Ashaolu, Dyshawn Pierre, Junior Cadougan, Kaza Keane, Robert Sacre, Myck Kabongo, Jordan Bachynski

I know many important players bailed but how many of these guys didn’t even get invited? I’m not sure the status of all of them, but I’m sure almost all of these guys could help the team.

Personally, I believe that there is a directive from Basketball Canada to give a preference to CIS trained athletes. The roster just doesn’t make sense (I’m sure I’m missing several high level players too)

Bad look for FIBA in its first tournament under new format. All while a huge basketball market is finally hosting it.
Wonder how they are gonna react, most probably it will speed the process of making Olympics for youth players as suggested before. But they really need to scratch the soccer format.
No NBA players can participate in qualifications now, only 1 year separated from Olympics. All bad ideas for its success
