CJ McCollum Agrees to 3 Year-$100M

The deal starts in 2021, CJ would have been a FA by then. and IIRC there is an expected big cap rise by then. That deal will look way better by that time (if he keeps playing at same level)
Just a quick reminder that 2021 free agency has the potential to be bigger than 2019, with Kawhi, PG, Giannis, Adams,Embiid, Gobert. And CJ & Dam was supposed to hit FA in that year too.
If CJ hit the market in that year, there was chance a desperate team would throw him the max or something close to that.
Also, a quick reminder that Portland was in Conference finals. When you reach that point you don’t trade your second best player when he is on his prime. You keep your core, add a piece or two and hope for internal improvements to help in making even more noise next year.

 I think they overpaid for him.  3 years 69mil is more of the value I would have looked to be getting him at as a GM.

 You don’t often see a team giving a guy an extension with two years still left on his deal unless it is for super max type deals. The Blazers have a huge amount of money tied into their backcourt but it keeps CJ there until Lillard’s contract would be going into it’s last year and keeps the duo togerher.

It may seem a lot of money but when you consider what he could get as a FA and the level of deals guys got this summer then it doesn’t look so steep,

 They are gonna have Lillard, CJ, Little and Simons all comfortably in their roles for a few years. They get time to try get the bigs right with this group. Whiteside will probably keep them competitive until Nurkic is 100% back and by then perhaps Whitesides money is off the books.. they can decide what they need to do to win. 

Lot of money for a guy who has never been an all-star 

as a nuggs fan that watched cj destroy us in the playoffs, i think this is well deserved.  i really beleive that if lillard was not on the team, cj would be a top 10 scorer.  it’s hard to find guys that score more than 20 ppg, yet can co-exist with another star player.  i think it’s smart that portland secure lillard and cj.  they are great compliments to one another, keep egos in check and give opposing backcourts nightmares, trying to defend against them.   

Its not a bad deal, especially since they gave Lillard $50mill. McCollum could of taken the jimmy butler route and want to be the star on his own team, but decided to share or defer the limelight with Lillard and stay in Portland.

Lillard    18ppg on 35% & 30% shooting

McCollum 25ppg on 52% & 42% shooting

2019 playoffs

Lillard      27ppg on  41%  37% shooting

Mc Collum 25ppg   44%    39% shooting

With Denver up 3-2 in the series, McCollum goes for 30 on 12/24 shooting in game 6 to keep them in it and force a game 7.

Then in the biggest game of their lives (game 7) Lillard chokes and goes 3/17 from the field while McCollum goes off  for 37 points 17/29 from the field

Question for the Portland people, who is overseeing the team financially now that Paul Allen has died? I understand his worth was in the billions many times over, loved his various teams, and that there is no fear of financial peril. Still, typically, when teams these kinds of big, long-term contracts (which combined with Lillard’s could have luxury tax implications for years), the owner signs off on it. I am curious as to who that person is now.

 Portland wasn’t that far from beating the warriors in the WCF. If he plays consistently at that level he’ll be a borderline hall of famer. He was phenomenal. With the difficulty portland has of keeping stars, it’s a good signing. I feel CJ will have another break out season.
