Detroit have claimed him off waivers. Don’t know much about him, I remember that he was fairly highly regarded but dropped in his draft. What sort of player are we getting? What can we expect?
Add him to the list of overhyped high schoolers who never did anything – malik pope, perry jones etc
athletic, stretch 4. he’s been star of multiple summer leagues the last few years but never seems to find much time once he goes to a team. showed potential in NOP and averaged 16 and 8 as an 8-game starter. i remember some knocks on him during draft was he had a thin frame and attitude issues. i’m guessing he’s not going to help much on D either.
i think detroit made a smart move by claiming him off waivers. from small sample size i’ve seen, he’s def got nba type offensive skills and gives detroit a stretch option with some length. with griffin having so many injuries, he may be a cheap insurance plan that could have some staying power if he reaches his pre-draft hype.
He is an end of the bench player so far and has yet to live up to his potential. Athletic uptempo big that can rebound, stretch the floor a little bit, not a great defender but can block shots.
Hes a very talented player but he hasnt secured a role as an NBA rotation guy because he struggles to make plays within the teams scheme and rythm. This was difficult to notice watching highlight reels of the guy but very easy to notice when watching him in full games.
Makes some bad reads that can kill a teams vibe. Like after 20 seconds of everybody fighting hard and then Wood forgot to close out on the shooter in the corner or after 6 passes on the offensive end and then wood drives into a double team and forces up a bad shot type things.
Personally I think hes a phenomenal player and someone teams should be willing to work on. Detroits been making some quiet good moves this offseason in the draft and in free agency.
Thank you for explaining that because I was struggling to figure out how to say it correctly. If you only watch Wood in a summer league setting you’d think he has star potential but he really struggles in the team setting. I imagine it has to be truly difficult to adapt to being a role player after spending considerable amounts of time on lower levels as a star. That’s definitely something people don’t mention enough and it’s undoubtedly why some players struggle so much when they reach the pros.
I would of taken Furkan Korkmaz over Christian Wood
I thought he actually played really well for the Pelicans. He’s honestly a guy who a team should have taken time to invest in more closely instead of bouncing around Summer Leagues and G-League.
