    I understand the money aspect, but to contribute to a contending team, if that’s what the Spurs still are, surely that’s better than competing for the worst record in the NBA? It’s his choice, but he’s just prioritised cash over opportunity.

Trey Lyles is a good consolation prize for the Spurs. He’s still only 23. His shooting percentages have been all over the place: 44, 36, 49, 42 from the field; 38, 32, 38, 26 from 3 in his first four years.

If Spurs’ shooting guru Chip Engelland can get him back up around 49/38, he will be a really useful player.

To me it looks like the Knicks are acquiring assets that they feel they will be able to move come the deadline to competing teams who think the likes of Marcus Morris, Bobby Portis or evan Elfrid Payton can be a key piece to their unit.

I think Julius Randle is a guy who they see as part of their future to be honest.

The Knicks are smart they’ve been gathering stretch 4’d that can defend on short team deals. With the way this off season has shaped up come deadline time contending teams will overpay for a guy like Morris since this season is wide open with no clear title favorite.

  You and festar got the right of it. The Knicks are in asset aqcuisition mode. I guarantee you at least two of these players will be flipped for draft capital to contenders. Since they struck out in free agency, theyre looking at the Boston/Sixers/ current Hawks model. Get picks, get young players, hope to hit some stars to carry your franchise.

    The idea that it is smarter to sign veteran players as supposed assets with the vision of flipping them as opposed to identifying young players who can play complementary basketball and develop along with their supposed core of Barrett, Randle, Knox and Robinson is laughable. The Bucks and Nuggets rebuilt their teams at the same time as the Sixers, and have done a better job at it. The Knicks are passing up on the opportunity to try to find the next Monte Morris, Nikola Jokic, Malcolm Brogdon, and Fred VanVleet, which would come while maintaining the financial flexibility that would come should a star come available or should some team look to sell a 1st rounder to get under the tax before the end of the year.

      Still think your veiw on the Knicks offseason is way off. Look at all the guys they are currently developing. You mentioned Barrett and Knox but what about Robinson, Smith, Trier, Ntilikina, Brazdeikis and Dotson. They have plans for all these guys and which means their hands are already full. It obviously takes resources to develop these young players and its tough enough to do that throughout an active season.
      
      You mentioned Van Vleet and Morris but what makes it so easy for teams like the Raptors, Nuggets, Spurs to develop the young players is most of their roster is actually full of capable rotation players with steady routines which means guys dont have to be babysat. They can get their 2-3 "development" players and give them a ton of attention and the rest of the team can even pitch in and help out. When you have a team of 12 developing players its alot harder to do.
      
      Look at the Raptors farm system for example. Its actually unfair to compare to another team. They always have a few guys on the end of the bench waiting for garbage time and going back and forth from the bench to starting for the G-League 905 Raptors. Siakam did it and won playoffs MVP, Boucher did it last year and won regular season MVP and will probablly be a part of the NBA rotation if he adds enough weight. Van Vleet did it, Norm did it. They have success. Last year we had Richardson (gone), Lloyd, Miller and Boucher as our main G-League guys. This year one or two of those guys will probably be on the active NBA roster and Hernandez and Davis will go to the G League, develop, eventually dominate and perform at MVP levels and then get called up. Its all structured but you need vets in established roles to create that.
      
      Sure Knicks struck out on Brogdon but what should they have done, offered him the Max? Maybe they are holding on to that money and those minutes for something better. They went and got two of the most underrated players in the NBA Randle and Portis and Im sure Knicks fans wont be complaining when they are averaging 40 points and 20 rebounds next year. Then they got vets for the young players to play up to that level, guys who play defined roles to hold the development players accountable.
      
      They struck out on Durant and Irving, they never had a chance with Dolan in charge. Dolan is an idiot he should sell the team but Scott Perry and Coach Fizdale are doing a good job taking the slow path the right way.

        Teams have to make sense in how they are constructed. Not every team plays similarly, but for a team how they build has to make sense. The Knicks hollowed out their roster and missed. Fine. They draft R.J. Barrett, who is now their most important player, obviously talented but far from perfect. In what possible way does Elfrid Payton complement what Barrett does well? Dennis Smith Jr was already given up by the Mavericks because they felt he would be entirely miscast in an off-ball role. One of those two can run the second unit offense, but neither comes across as a good fit next to Barrett. They gave Payton 2 years and $16 million. Why?
        
        Wayne Ellington is a hired shooter whose less than impressive defense is why he has (actually) played for seven teams (has technically been on nine) in ten years and waived multiple times, including last February. They gave him almost $8 million. Is this because they think some team will trade something or someone of value for him? Reggie Bullock is a bit of a similar case. He has a better defensive reputation than Ellington. Still, he was just dealt for Svi Mykhailiuk and a 2nd last winter. Are they going to add enough above the cheaper alternatives of Damyeon Dotson, Kevin Knox, and Iggy Brazdeikis to justify the money?
        
        Up front, if the Knicks want Taj Gibson as a mentor, good. In obvious Knick fashion, they have gotten well out in front of themselves on the Mitchell Robinson hype train, but I think anyone would make the case having a guy like Gibson around should help him grow. If they think Julius Randle is a good consolation prize, I can be willing to be accepting of that over my personal objections. They also now have $30 million committed to Marcus Morris and Bobby Portis this year. As individuals, I tend to like both, but in what possible way do they fit with what the team already there?

This has to piss owners off. Spurs restructured Carroll’s deal and then traded Bertrans. I know Morris didn’t sign anything but all the off season deals are based on word. Wonder if Morris will get the cold treatment by the league next summer, if I was an owner I wouldn’t even talk to him.

Morris has probably taken a payday. I don’t see him being blackballed but he might not get great offers. Contenders would always give him vet minimum.

The Knicks have a PF logjam like never before.
