    I’m not a fan of this..so if the season is shorter where is the money coming from to pay the players and the lost money?…I think ticket prices will go up…

    Not a fan of mid-season tournment..what’s going to motivate players to play in a tournment our cup that doesn’t count or help the legacy? I think key players will rest during this..

    How do they monetize the cup? If it is a straight single-elimination tournament played out over 10-14 days, my guess is they centralize it. Maybe they try it in Las Vegas in lieu of a team where it can make the semis and finals for a big event ($$$) weekend. If my hunch is right, this is also how the NBA tries to play meaningful games overseas without putting a team there. They can do a year where the rounds are split between Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul. The next year goes to London, Paris, Rome, and Berlin. Frankly, just for prestige purposes, Dubai and Abu Dhabi might put up quite a bit of cash to host.

    I’m not sure the union would go for it unless there are assurances that their share of revenue is guaranteed in case of a short-fall in the trade off between 82 games and 70-some games and a cup. Even then, good luck selling this on coaches, who at least initially, will figure that their job security will hinge on the traditional season and not a new competition.

       Agreed. I’m not opposed to revamps, but these ideas aren’t helpful at all. I especially dislike the mid season tournament because what’s the point. Why would players care? Why would fans care? If the only true goal is the NBA championship then I could imagine these tournaments looking like summer league with end of the bench guys and young players doing the majority of the playing.

    Season need to be shortened for sure. Back to Backs need to be eliminated and more rest to players
    82 games is a random number that was established decades ago when the game was way less physical and less demanding.
    There is nothing to support that this is the best number for player’s health, teams have been resting players for years now. And it hurts the fans who buy tickets to see those players.

    I think the best time for shortened season is when TV deal is going up and there is expected raise in cap. So instead of having 2016 all over again, cap remains the same but you get less games.

    I don’t like midseason tournament but will hold judgement until see what is the plan.

       I don’t believe there was ever a time when the games were way less physical than they are now. The big difference is the number of possessions. Every team wants to sprint up and down the court now which has increased the pace and number of possessions.

      Eliminating the back to backs is an important choice, the problem is less games equals less money and I doubt the owners or players are ok with less money.

        I’ve to respectfully disagree with 1st statement
        Regarding owners, this is an issue that will need to be addressed one way or another. Fans (who attend) don’t want to buy tickets for his son to watch Kawhi to find he is resting tonight. No network want to find that the games they have present players who are rested.
        And players and coaches have been complaining about it for sometime now.
        That is why I think it will need to be done smartly and during a time of increased cap. It will make transition way easier if it is just “you are getting less work instead of more money” rather than pay cuts from current salary

           We’ll have to agree to disagree on physicality, but I’d recommend watching any old clips to see how much more physical players were permitted to be in the past.

          It will be interesting to see what is done about players resting. I imagine the league will continue to introduce rules to attempt to end it, but teams will have the flexibility to list it as injuries rather than rest so it will be difficult to ever fully be rid of it. Ending back to backs entirely would be a helpful step.

    Scottie Pippen made a good point..if you shorten the season then any record broking going forward should have an asterik..Players will be more rested, score more points, rebounds, etc.
