I know not many people care about the Hornets. I don’t blame you. Why would you. Many draft mistakes have been made, leading to a cap-restricted, Kemba only, expensive middling team.

Here is a look at who they could’ve drafted dating back to the 2014 NBA draft (Using only the actual picks they had for 1st and 2nd rounders, and only players they could’ve actually selected. So only players they passed over are eligible.). Just including Kemba Walker from before 2014 as he is their franchise player. (Not filling out a full team, just last 5 years worth of support through draft, not including possible trades over time). Included POSSIBLE 2019 draft picks. Brandon Clarke may go before the 12th pick, and Ty Jerome could be a great value in the 2nd round.

    PG – Kemba Walker
    SG – Donovan Mitchell
    SF – Kevin Huerter
    PF – Brandon Clarke
    C – Nikola Jokic

    6th – Jordan Clarkson
    C/PF – Myles Turner
    PG – Monte Morris
    C – Mitchell Robinson
    PG/SG – Ty Jerome

This definitely is better than what they have now. Again, this is just to show who they actually could’ve drafted and essentially passed on. Anyone else have one for their bad drafting teams?

    PG – Kemba Walker
SG – Donovan Mitchell (2017 13th pick) – We had 11th pick – took Malik Monk
SF – Kevin Huerter (2018 19th pick) – We had 12th pick – took Miles Bridges
PF – Brandon Clarke – could possibly select with 2019 12th pick
    C – Nikola Jokic (2014 41st pick) – We had 9th pick – took Noah Vonleh

    6th – Jordan Clarkson (2014 46th pick) – We had 45th pick – took Dwight Powell
    C/PF – Myles Turner (2015 11th pick) – We had 9th pick – took Frank Kamisky
PG – Monte Morris (2017 51st pick) – We had 40th pick – took Dwayne Bacon
    C – Mitchell Robinson (2018 36th pick) – We had 34th pick – took Devonte Graham
    PG/SG – Ty Jerome – could possibly select with 2019 36th pick

    No 2016 picks.

Starting lineup gives scoring machines in Kemba and Donovan, 3 and D wing in Huerter and great switching defense and swiss army knife Clarke with good passing big man who can do it all MVP canidate Jokic. Good scoring spark Clarkson off bench. Great big man depth with shot-blocking of Turner and Robinson. Monte Morris doesn’t commit turnovers and Ty Jerome can play multiple wing positions, and would just be utility role player but highly effective.

Take it back one more year and instead of Cody Zeller we could’ve had Giannis. Michael was a helluva player, but that dude has been nothing but trash as an executive.

While this is fun, it fails to account for several important factors:

    1. If they had taken whatever player they should have, it would change where they select in subsequent years.

    2. Just because a player taken later by someone else turned into a star doesn’t mean that player would’ve turned into a star for your team. He might not have had the opportunity (minutes, role, usage), he might not have connected with teammates and coaching staff, etc.

    3. Every year there are 2-3 diamonds in the rough, found late in the first or anywhere in the second round. This doesn’t mean that every team who passed on them is incompetent (although I realize you didn’t say or imply that they are); if it did, then every team is incompetent, because there are very accomplished players whom every team passed on.

Yes, however I couldn’t possibly cover EVERY scenario! That is why just for fun. Also, we have sucked pretty much every year, so there is ALWAYS minutes available on our team lol. Plus, while every team misses on draft picks, some miss and suck way more than ever.

Take the GS Warriors. They drafted Steph 7th, Klay 10th, Draymond in 2nd round, etc.. but missed on Harrison Barnes and some others. Point is they draft and a lot of teams, actually MOST teams draft way better than the Hornets. Otherwise they would actually do something like make the playoffs consistently or anything worthwhile. Just an objective, what if, can’t possibly cover ALL basis opinio article. You know, like MOST of the articles on the Internet!

Don’t talk about Jokic, no team was taking him at 9, if you passed in the second okay, but don’t bring up the 9th pick. The whole league missed that one.

Frankly I don’t mind most of those picks outside Kamisky, you guys turned down that huge offer Danny made because he wanted Winslow. Even if you kept the pick there were like five better guys.

Yet overall the issue is you seem like you can’t develop your talent because you want to win now. Look at Vonleh who was a raw high upside guy, you trade him and now he’s turning into the player you drafted. Powell Wasa very solid pick, yet not for you.

You can’t be a maxed out team cap wise that needs young guys and then not develop them because you want to try and win. They need a reset or bridge year or two. It’s like MJ only cares about profits and has zero long-term strategy.

True about Jokic. However, could have taken Lavine or literally ANY other player. Here’s maybe a better idea, everyone should understand. The Hornets SUCK at drafting. Everyone misses, but some are good at it, some are bad. We are bad at it. Even without Jokic, Myles Turner could’ve started at Center and been in our range. The point is still effective.

the best they can do is let the mkg,  biyombo, and Williams become expiring and take on youth and assets if they can.  I like the bridges pick last year but the monk and kaminsky picks where bad.  Porter jr, Keldon Johnson won’t be sexy picks but I think they could be decent. In the second round then take the big. It’d be nice if they could find a sucker for that Batum contract but I don’t see it. In the second jalen mcdaniels, Louis king make a lot of sense or what ever best big man is available. Kemba has spoke of his admiration for Charlotte but I think the ripple effect of Klay and Durant injuries mean someone will push their chips in as the warriors even if they resign them won’t be a lock for much and despite winning kawhi could bolt. A lot of teams have money so in the best scenario Charlotte may win by somebody signing Kemba and they cay can rebuild the right way.

And to make the Kaminsky pick even more brutal is that the Celtics offered 4 picks for the 9th selection.

Yeah, that was ridiculous! I am not defending the Hornets in any way. Should’ve definitely taken all the picks, since Kaminsky can’t even start on the team.

If you go back a few years further you could of had kawhi, Bradley Beal and Giannis too I guess instead of biyombo, MKG and Zeller. But that kind of just shows the randomness of the draft and also how difficult it can be to build through the draft if you don’t nail your picks. It’s easy to say now that the hornets should’ve took jokic over Vonleh but no team would have even considered taking anywhere near the lottery in 2014. I do have to say that pretty much all of the picks the hornets have made over the past 6-7 years, I didn’t think any were necessarily terrible picks at the time.

You don’t think ANY were terrible at the time? So name that has worked out (besides Miles last year who only has a year under his belt)?

I mean, it’s easy to say they were bad picks with the hindsight of several years but none really seemed that bad at the time they were drafted. The kaminsky pick was bad I’ll give you that, not so much that they took kaminsky but because of the circumstances around it and what they reportedly could’ve got for it. If you look at the other guys they drafted, mkg, zeller, vonleh, monk, bridges all were well-regarded as prospects coming into the draft. Sometimes you can do all your homework, but things just don’t pan out. And like has been said above, sometimes it’s not just who you draft, but how you develop them that makes all the difference.

let me just tell y’all how bad it is being a Hornets fan. No front office stability, dumb trades, horrible contracts and even worse draft picks. Honestly if Kemba walks in free agency I’m gonna flip because we could’ve gotten a pretty good young package for him at the deadline. I expect us to be at the top of the draft for the next few years unless we get Kemba stays and we get another second option next to him.

If they draft Clarke 11th… they really are dumb.

I think Charlotte’s draft atrocities really took a turn for the worse in the Bobcat days. From 2005… it all went to stink for a whole decade!!! (aside from Kemba)

I think it’s easy to say "they could have picked X player", but we could do that for every team and every star player that was drafted outside the top few picks. I think a more telling measure is to compare Charlotte’s lottery picks to other players taken at that selection in the same time period. So here are the terrible Bobcats era lottery picks and some players that other (sensible) teams chose with the same draft selection –

    13th Sean May (2005)

Other 13th picks since 2005: Donovan Mitchell, Devin Booker, Zach Lavine, Kelly Olynyk, Markieff Morris.

    3rd Adam Morrison (2006)

Other 3rd picks since 2005: James Harden, Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic, Bradley Beal, Horford, Tatum, etc etc

    8th Brandan Wright (2007)

Other 8th picks since 2005: Rudy Gay, Colin Sexton, KCP, Terrence Ross.

    9th DJ Augustin (2008)

Other 9th picks since 2005: Demar Derozan, Andre Drummond, Gordon hayward, Dennis Smith Jr, Kevin Knox, Joakim Noah.

    12th Gerald Henderson (2009)

Other 12th picks since 2005: Steven Adams, Dario Saric, Thaddeus Young, Taurean Prince.

    2nd MKG (2012)

Other 2nd picks since 2005: Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, Victor Oladipo, D’Angelo Russell, Brandom Ingram, Marvin Bagley.

    4th Cody Zeller (2013)

Other 4th picks since 2005: Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Kristaps Porzingis, Mike Conley, Aaron Gordon, Jaren Jackson Jr.

    9th Noah Vonleh (2014)

See DJ Augustin (and all the elite 9th picks).

    9th Frank Kaminsky (2015)

See DJ Augustin (and all the elite 9th picks).

Charlotte has consistently drafted as bad as any team in the league, and the flaw in their logic is preferring known commodities and/or more polished players to high risk/high upside prospects.

To me, that is the bain of their existence. All you really have to do is nail one or two big time high upside players, surround them with team-first, do-whatever-it-takes players, and you have a chance.

If you’re consistently drafting Frank Kamisky and Cody Zeller, however, you basically have no chance at doing much of anything.
