There is a lot of uncertainty outside of the top 3 picks in this draft (which basically everyone seems to agree on in some order). However, the one interesting thing I’ve noticed from this site’s mocks is that they seem to have zeroed in on hachimura as the best overall prospect outside of the top 3, and this hasn’t seemed to change throughout the college season (he’s been holding steady on that 4 line for quite a while).

While I like hachimura overall as a prospect and think he has a ton of potential, I think it would be a huge gamble to take him that high. He has a developing offensive game, but his skill set and understanding of the game is still pretty raw in many areas. He wasn’t a high volume 3 point shooter in college, and doesn’t really have the ball-handling or playmaking skills to play on the wing right now, nor the size to play down low. He has the physical profile to be a very good defender, but he really lacks the instincts right now. Granted, these are all things that can develop in time, but there is no guarantee they will.

Most of the mocks I have seen seem to have hachimura ranked anywhere from late lotto to mid-first round, which I think is probably likely more accurate of where he will actually get drafted. Is anyone else as high on him as this site seems to be and why? And would anybody feel comfortable with using a top 5 pick on him?

I wouldn’t take him top 5..Gonzaga players scare me. They all look good in that system but come to the NBA and don’t stand out. I think he’ll be a solid pro but if he’s the best available at 5 I’m trading the pick.

This site has him compared to Antawn Jamison. That’s his absolute best case, home run scenario. I actually think he has a greater chance at becoming Ryan Gomes (former providence PF) than Jamison. There are certain programs that make me wary of drafting their players, and Gonzaga is one of them unless they are absolutely exemplary in 2+ areas.

Domatas Sabonis was a good pick recently from their program, and Kelly Olynyk was decent at 13th….. but some other 1st rounders were considerably overdrafted from Gonzaga in previous years (i.e Austin Daye, Adam Morrison, Dan Dickau to name a few).

To be clear, I think Rui is an NBA player & that he’ll stay around for a while. But I believe ultimately his career will pan out more to the 12-20 talent range than a top 5 pick.

Zach Collins is also doing well even if he isn’t standing out yet, but he was expected to take a bit of time.

it’s like there is not that big of diffrence outside the top 3 with players in the 4-30 range, that what so unique in this draft i think, 4-30 range are close in value relatively… but in Rui case i still see him a top 10, with his proven scoring productivity, it’s too much to pass on while he still has potential to improve his all around game(started to play the game at later age), i see him at least as Kyle Kuzma type player with some Glenn Robinson in him…

I think his guard skills will come, and I could see him straddling between the 3-4 like many forwards seem to now (Siakam for example). But I could also see him becoming a true 3.

He wasn’t a volume 3 point shooter, but has shown to be a good free throw shooter both this year and last year. This is a better indicator of the type of shooter he will be on the next level. The biggest example of this is Kawhi Leonard (not even as good a 3 point shooter as Rui coming out and has become great at the NBA level).

I like him as a propsect, he has the frame and strength to be an elite SF.

I think Hachimura actually has a pretty wide range right now anywhere from 5-20.

I think this site has it wrong with Hachimura. I see a lot of potential in him, but he’s not above Coby White or Jarrett Culver. Those 2 really proved a lot this year, Rui still has a lot to learn in order to reach top 5 level. This is an odd draft class though. A lot of players in the same realm after the top 3. Realistically I think Rui just misses the top 5 and goes 6th, but a lot will depend on how the lottery turns out as well what teams are looking for.

I think a lot could come down to how work outs go between the likes of Rui, Hunter and Little in particular. The order from 4th pick onwards is very much up in the air. Rui who has had 3 years at college should be clearly further along than a freshman, if he’s still a couple of years away from being NBA ready then a team would likely be better rolling the dice on a freshman.

I can see him going inside the top 10 but I’d struggle to say he has more upside than a Coby White or Jaxson Hayes and even Bol Bol who is my draft wildcard. Rui will probably have a solid NBA career and could be a very good starter and 3/4th guy on a team but I just don’t see him being an All Star level guy. A team who has some young stars in place and needs a guy to compliment them would be a good landing place for him. Washington and Minny sprang to mind as options.

Push come to shove, I think Rui probably projects to Jerami Grant, which is not a bad thing but not a top 5 pick even in this draft. He does come with marketing potential because he would be the best and highest profile Japanese player to play in the NBA, but it is always dangerous to let that come into play. I think White has a lot of Leandro Barbosa to him, and there are more teams now wanting to play at a pace that made Barbosa such a weapon. Bol Bol is a doctor’s call. It is never good for a guy who looks frail and like an injury waiting to happen to go down with a season-ending one a month into the season. That said, I do think some team and their doctor will find a way to get behind the health and potential of the 7’2" guy who made 13-25 from behind the arc. Jaxson Hayes has an interesting story as a guy who barely played as a junior in high school, had a late growth spurt, and was originally more into football. He checks a lot of boxes for being a prototypical late developing guy, but there still has to be some concern that he wasn’t really all that impressive. He looked like he had potential, which he obviously does, but the gaps between where he is, where teams envisioning him being, and where he is now getting projected to go in the draft are a bit surprising to me.

I wouldn’t mind Memphis taking him anywhere from 4 to 8

I think Rui is the biggest question mark in the lottery. Reminds me of a less athletic Blake Griffin which I don’t think translates.

Rui has a very sound fundamental game, better than average midrange game,
