aamir543ParticipantI made the JV AAU team! All the hard work finally paid off!
On a non emotional note, I probably made it as a 11th or 12th man, so I’ll have to earn every single minute possible. If not, I can always be the Indian Brian Scalabrine.

aamir543ParticipantGood guess Leroy, but I retired from the Mathletes a year and half ago after 8th grade, my long division isn’t as sharp as it once used to be, but like they say, your addition is the last to leave you.

aamir543ParticipantToday is Day 4 of the school tryouts. They narrowed it down from 45 to 16 (plus the 6 returners). He says he’ll carry 16 of us on the roster. 2 and a half more hours untill today’s tryout,, and I still have butterflys. I did really well on day 1 and 2, but stunk it up conditioning and speed wise yesterday. But coach told me that if I don’t make the team, it’s not because of my conditioning, saying it’s a fixable problem. Just gotta go out there and give it my all, wish me luck!

aamir543ParticipantHad a good day, I actually ran the suicdes in the given time, plus I beasted on the big man post up drills, but I know that conditioning is going to be a challange for me, so just gotta keep my head up, not get cocky at all, and just play ball. Another tryout tomorrow, and then I assume we’ll have cuts on Monday, probably get down to around 18 guys, and maybe have periodic cuts over the next one and half months. Just gotta keep on truging.

rileymcshea3ParticipantYeah were about to start tryouts for our highschool team but im allready on JV (as freshmen) so i dont have to worry about anything but just keep trying to impress the coaches just remember they pick favorites

aamir543ParticipantMissed it on the last cuts. I am sad…………………But the star big man, (who is currently playing football) might transfer. If so, we’ll only have 2 legit guys above 5’10 that can play the 4 and 5, (I am around 6’0) so I’ll be waiting for the call, just like these guys.

M-DYMESParticipantI’m sure you know MJ got cut from his HS team too so use this as motivation. You have size and that is HUGE!!! You can always work on your game and athleticism but height is one thing that is out of your hands. Big men take more time to develop.
If this kid transfers, come in, and if you are on the bench…be the Scalabrine of your team. Show enthusiasm and at the same time do the Peyton Manning and watch the game. Learn weakness and pick apart the team, tell the coaches what you see. If they see a great bball mind, a person who truly loves the game, they will be rooting for you and once you get in the game, then you will look even better.
When on the court, do the hustle. Dive for balls. Box out. Play intense D, give that side of the ball all you got even if it means sacrificing some O.

aamir543ParticipantThanks MDymes, It means a lot.
To be honest, after I spoke to coach(who was very positive, and told me to come out next year, and to work with him on post drills) I got the impression that I was sort of even with one of the big men, and even maybe a better option than another, but my speed, conditioning, athleticism, and most of all height(the other guys were a good inch or two taller than me) is what led to their decision. I am not counting on getting a roster spot if the other guy transfers, but gotta keep that potion open. Just gotta woek even harder to work on my weaknesses, and it’ll eventually pay off in one way or another.

providencefriars1ParticipantI dont mean to sound insensitive or anything but how did you make an AAU team and get cut from the high school team?

Posted on: Sun, 10/16/2011 - 11:01am #604044
aamir543ParticipantFair question, I go to a school with almost 3,000 kids, and about 35-40 of the 45 kids at tryouts were serious ballers. The competition is really tough, and although we may not have a dominating player, we are all pretty much even across the board. Plus I am a sophmore, and they need a to have a certain amount of Freshmen, which is why I think they chose me to go over a couploe other guys.

M-DYMESParticipantAAU ball varies man. Believe me, I’ve come across AAU teams before that just straight up shouldn’t even be associated with AAU as a whole. If I am not mistaken, anyone can create an AAU team as long as they pay the fees and can fill a roster.

providencefriars1ParticipantIve come across some bad teams myself, but to have a jv aau team usually means you are in a big organization and most of the big orgs have decent teams.
