With the regular season over and 17 “experts” being wrong on Atlanta beating Miami. I always find it strange we wait so long for the draft lottery once we know which teams will be in it. The draw could happen this weekend and the teams could then schedule workouts and begin to plan their strategy for next season. Play off teams will be working out players further down the list and could do so once they are eliminated. Or even whilst still in the play offs – the draft scouts and GMs won’t all need to be with the team during the play offs and the coaches could call the prospects back for a 2nd workout when they are free.

Maybe it is a bit wanting to know who will get Wemby but it seems like an unneccessary wait?

I agree. The only thing stopping it I guess is they don’t want to distract from the start of the playoffs.
Another thing I’d change is to have free agency before the draft. Having the draft before free agency means that talent will always be drafted over fit. Not every team is a free agent hot spot, so teams would be more likely to draft for need, rather than unrealised potential.

I think the draft has to happen before FA as the FA market can run for several weeks and you cannot do that before the season end so that would push the draft back to mid/late August.
