What a pleasant surprise this guy has been so far this preseason. I know these games don’t necessarily mean anything, but in a game with multiple all-nba players he looked like the best player on the floor. And he’s barely 20 years old.
Horton-Tucker has been handling the ball a lot in the preseason, so it would be unreasonable to expect his offensive production when the actual season starts. . He has clearly made some nice strides but hasn’t proven himself to be a consistent shooter yet. However, what is really intriguing is his defensive potential. With a thick frame, long arms, quick hands and feet he has the physical tools to be a nightmare as a perimeter defender. There was one particular play that really stood out to me. He was matched up one on one in isolation with kawhi and just ripped the ball away from him. I know this is preseason and he might have caught him by surprise, but you just don’t see anyone do that to kawhi, particularly a 20 year old with relatively no nba experience.
Tucker was a project when they drafted him and someone who seemed a few years away from playing any type of meaningful role. However, the way he is looking right now, he could be a big part of the lakers rotation this year, and definitely is a player to watch out for in the future.
