MopgrassParticipantI’m interested to hear people’s opinion on the importance of weight/strength. Is weight/strength a make or break sure.
I feel like someone like Thon Maker was never going to get it going because his body type and he could never add enough weight to his frame. Obviously you could talk shot selection about the guy, but I think that could’ve been fixed.
On the other hand you have Brandon Ingram. Weak frame. Fights so hard. Doesn’t have the type of frame you think would work. But he’s awesome. So, weight doesn’t stop him.
Which brings me to Tyrell Terry. I love his game. He’s so shifty, his handles are so good, and I think he might be the shooter of the draft. But he ways less than high school freshmen I’ve met. It say he’s 160 lbs. I’m not sure he even weighs that. Can he come back from this weight deficiency.
I feel like this guy would be the 2nd best PG in the draft if not for being 160. He gets Trae Young comparisons and it’s one of the best player comparisons I’ve heard. Except, Young is strong. I think with a added strength, Terry will get even better from 3. His creativity is exceptional. I feel like his his ceiling is higher than than Hayes, but his floor is way below.
Can this dude come back from his weight?

ZouldiersParticipantIt´s a make or break for a big man due to the fact that they have to bang down low against their fellow big men every night. Not so much for the guards/wings though but it will help their game in terms of finishing around the rim and not getting beat around much by stronger players if they gain strength/muscle. MJ had to gain weight to withstand the Pistons and eventually win his first ring.
To answer your question on Terry, he did gain around 18 lbs during the pandemic so yeah he is capable of gaining weight while not affecting his shooting.

MopgrassParticipantIt also seems like strong guards end up with a massive advantage. Especially on D.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantThe talk of Terry gaining 20 or so lbs. misses the point that even at 170 lbs. he is really light for a 6’2″ or 6’3″ guard. Even if you look at a sport where being light matters like boxing, you rarely see a super middleweight who is 6’3.” Also, there is a real chance Terry’s agent told him to do the NFL Combine trick of drinking as much water as possible before stepping on the scale, because he knows that the weight is going to concern teams. Frankly, it is rightly so. De’Aaron Fox and Dennis Schroder are probably the only two guys in the past decade to make it while entering the league in that general area of height and weight, but those two are vastly better athletically. Maybe the shooting and ability to endear himself to coaches helps his cause for sticking, but the bar for how good he has to be offensively to overcome the liability he will be when he gets bullied defensively is a real cause for concern.
