zolaParticipantSurprisingly Grizzlies are playoff contenders this season. This topic is about their short ang long term future and also about comparing several players.
For next season they have only 57 million of guaranteed money to Valanciunas, Morant, Jaren Jackson, Anderson, Jones, Clarke, Allen and Guduric. They have to resign Dillon Brooks, DeAnthony Melton, maybe Jae Crowder and I supose it will cost them about 35-40 million. That is about 100 million for 11 players so they will have about 20-25 million for one more player, especially since Morant and Clarke need to renew contracts only in three years, Jackson in two.
What is their biggest need? They have two young PG, Morant and Jones, so that position is sealed. Brooks, Allen, Melton, Guduric cover SG. Jaren Jackson, Valanciunas and Clarke are long term bigs. Kyle Anderson has two more years on his contract and he covers SF and PF positions. Other guys are expiring contracts. So theirs biggest need is SF.
What they can get in next year’s free agency? Next year free agency class is not that strong as last years, but there is few interesting wing free agents. Bogdan Bogdanovic would probably be the best chioce. He is SG, but Brooks can play SF. However I think Kings will resign him since he is RFA. Joe Harris and Davis Bertans are UFA which would be good solutions.
On the other hand, Grizzlies have few expiring contracts who can be good trade assets. Morant, Jackson, Clarke, Brooks are untouchable, but Allen and Melton can be young trade assets although they don’t have high trade value. They owe pick to Celtics, but they have Jazz (probably 2022) and Warriors 2024 future picks. Since they are in the playoff fight and have few expiring contacts, should they be buyers these days?
Jae Crowder is their starter at SF and he plays good, but not great. Solomon Hill and Kyle Anderson plays back up forward positions. They have nice seasons, but I think they need better player here.
There is few forwards who can be Grizzlies trade targets, so I will bring a few trade ideas.
-Harrison Barnes in Memphis
Andre Iguodala in Dallas or LA Cllipers
Sacramento gets Jazz pick and the pick from Mavs or Cllipers and expiring contracts of Solomon Hill and Courtney Lee or Mo Harkless
If Kings want to save money for Bogdanovic, this could be good deal for them
-Otto Porter- same trade as with Kings
If Bulls want to save money
-Robert Covington in Memphis
Andre Iguodala in Dallas or LA Cllipers
Minnesota gets Jazz pick and the pick from Mavs or Cllipers and expiring contract of Courtney Lee or Mo Harkless
-Justise Winslow and Dion Waiters in Memphis
Andre Iguodala, Josh Jackson and Jazz pick in Miami
Miami gets experienced vet for playoff (maybe they can resign him for next season too), saves money for next season and for 2021 free agency and gets a pickAll of this guys have contracts 2-3 years after this season and they expires by the time Grizzlies should re-sign Morant and Clarke, so they can afford anyone of them.
So my questions are:
Should they wait for free agency or try to make some trade now?
Who would be the best fit for Grizzlies from all of this guys mentioned in trades and free agency?
Which trade is the most realistic?2+ -

OhCanada-ParticipantI think the best fit of the guys you mentioned is Covington. Basically a better version of Crowder is the Grizzlies system but I also think it will be necessary to keep Jae in the rotation his toughness and pest like play gives the Grizzlies an element they need that Covington wont provide. If you can give Covington starts and enough minutes for him to want to resign like they did with Valanciunas last year while managing to keep Crowder in the rotation as not to mess up the teams chemistry too much then trading a late 1st round pick and Igoudala wouldnt be too much of a loss.

The GoatParticipantI think Winslow has a lot of potential still and could contribute at multiple positions, like Crowder can.

RUDEBOY-Participanti hear the grizzlies r in the market for a backup center……of course theres the iggy and crowder rumors…crowder made it clear he doesn’t want to leave and the young stars of the team look up to him…..I think they could use an outside shooter….

OhCanada-ParticipantThey do kinda need a 2nd big that can guard in space as an alternative to Valanciunas and rebound to close out possessions. Jackson’s rebounding is terrible and the night he sat out for suspension they got absolutely destroyed on the glass and with Valanciunas guarding in space. Maybe a guy like Tristan Thompson would make sense for them.

r377ParticipantPer league sources, Andre Iguodala is prepared to sit out the rest of this season if Memphis isn’t able to orchestrate a trade with one of the agreed-upon teams he designated by Thursday’s trade deadline.
— is there a reason why Iggy won’t play ? They are in playoff contention

HitsterParticipantWith all this talk about GSW making moves in due course would a team like Memphis accept GSW’s pick for someone like Brandon Clarke if the pick ended up as say 4th to 6th. Memphis would be maximizing their return on Clarke and would get a good pick in this year’s draft.
Clarke is one of these high energy slightly smaller frontcourt players who can shoot 3’s who’d excel on a smallball team like GSW.

RUDEBOY-ParticipantClarke is 1 of the 5 best rookies. I highly doubt Memphis will trade him for the 4 or 5th pick. Maybe for the 1st pick to select Wiseman.

RUDEBOY-ParticipantGrizzlies finally trade Iggy. Not to Lakers or clippers. But Miami, they receiving Winslow in return. The deal isn’t complete. There could be other pieces in this deal. Crowder and Hill were held out of the lineup. Their deals r expiring. I like Winslow. Solid around player. But haven’t been healthy. Has missed 134 GM’s since entering the NBA in 2015. The grizzlies have 3 Dukies from that championship team
